Hope it´s not too hot for you; half of our Members are back in the UK. or Europe , possibly enjoying the rain. I must say I wouldn´t mind a few showers, it would reduce my water bill. Perhaps it will be Northern Spain for me next year, in the region of Vigo and Pontevedra, some good sailing possibly. I would like to hear from you if you have been in that area.
I expect like Houri and myself, you have been watching the Olympics or perhaps not. Sad to say I didn´t see much Sailing, I sincerely hope the Royal Yachting Association. will provide us with a video. Our sailors finished on a high note bringing home 1 Gold and 4 Silvers medals. This is the fourth consecutive Olympics we have won 5 medals or more! If I remember correctly we won 6 medals in 2008 when the Games were in China; 4 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. Now although no one is going to say it, there must have been some thoughts that we could repeat that success on home waters.
Racing a Dinghy is like no others Sports, you have the Tide, the Waves and Wind to help or hinder you, there are days when you wish you had a bit more weight and visa versa in light winds. As a light weight I much preferred the lighter winds up to force 3.
“Sparky” the Manager of the British Team will be looking forward to creating a Team for Brazil in 2016. I am reasonably sure it will be without our most successful Olympic Sailor Ben Anslie. He has his sights on the “America´s Cup” and why not, if any one can bring it to our shores it´s “Ben”. We had the pleasure of meeting him when he came to one of the “Extreme 40” Catamarans meetings in Almería. I don´t think we will see them here again in the near future. It costs money! Now, if you have the opportunity to vist Portland don´t miss it , it´s a Dinghy Sailors Paradise.
We should remember the three Spanish Girls who won “Gold” in the “Elliott 6 metres” beating the Australian trio, it was the last sailing medal of the Games; they were: Tamara Echegoyen Dominguez, Sofía toro Prieto and Angela Pumariega.
Our Sailors that are here meet up on Sunday mornings at “Don Tomas” at Garrucha, opposite the New Marina, if there is no wind, then it´s a cold drink and a chat. Hope to see you there.
Take care John
