Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 25th May 2005

If, like me you make a contribution to Telefonica – well they take money out of my bank – you will be pleased to know that we have a share in the “VO70 Telefonica Movistar” an ocean racer getting ready for the next “Volvo Round the World Race” Iker Martinez (Olympic Gold Medalist) and the lads crewing her, tell me they have set a new 24 hour record covering 530 miles in 24 hrs. It was a quick satellite phone call from the Southern Ocean, you don’t have to reply, I’ve sent them your congratulations.

We hope to have some kind of race on Sunday 5th June to celebrate our 3rd anniversary, weather permitting. Some of you may remember we had 8 boats on show at the Artisan Centre on the 1st June 2002, when the club was founded – so how are we doing now? Well within the club we have 21 dinghies and catamarans, 4 sailboards, 2 inflatables (I would like a R.I.B.), Oh! And Terry’s Shetland 18, it could make a 1st Class committee boat for the officer of the day. With the menagerie of boats we have, it would be handicap racing or a pursuit race, they were always a bit of fun. Slowly, Slowly we seem to be moving in the right direction.

The good news from the Ayuntamiento is we should have a licence to put a cabin on the playa, we’ll have to anchor it down, remember the last one disappeared and no one saw it go!

The 15th Mediterranean Games are only a month away, they start on the 24th June for 10 days. There are 8 days of sailing at the “Club de Mar” in Almeria, classes Laser and 470, I hope to be there, the dates are 25th June to the 2nd July. At Cuevas we have the rowing 30th June to 2nd July and canoeing 25th and 26th June, it’s at the new lake just below the dam, on your doorstep!

What’s going to happen to the lake after the games? Just one end of it would make a grand nursery for young “Optimist” sailors they can start at 8 years old.

There’s no better sight than seeing a hundred or so “Oppies” taking to the water, they were at Almeria recently, a great character building sport that can be with you for a lifetime.

We have spoken to the councillor for sport in Cuevas, but the lake won’t be handed over to them until after the Games. We have the Optimists - we just need the water!

Come and talk to us on the Playa Del Cantal
