Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 29th May 2008
Hola Amigos, do me a favour and lift your glass, the Toast is "Santa Irene Club de Vela". Why would you do that? Because the 1st of June was the 6th Anniversary of the Club. Six years ago, 2002 on Saturday the 30th of May, I along with friends, transported my 8 sailing dinghies to the new Artisan Centre, for the 1st ever Mojacar Boat Show.
My sincere thanks to Sra Beatriz, a councillor and local school teacher, to Miguel Egea, to Sharon Penfold and Family, to Eddy who brought along dinghy Number 9 to young Analisa and Marian, who manned the stand! We were there for the weekend, Sunday the 1st of June being our best day, when the local artistes were there too. It would be nice to talk to any of you who were there that weekend.
We still haven't a Club House or Dinghy Park but we do have a variety of Dinghies and Catamarans, 2 small sailing cruisers and 2 safety boats plus some very enthusiastic members who will welcome you with open arms, look at our Website.
I've been thinking of the future and our 10th Anniversary, it will be 2012 and Olympic Year. How about a "Boat Show", the real thing, it would do the local area a power of good.
Qingdao in China is the venue for this year Olympic Sailing. There, they have the "Double Thousand Project". Millions are being donated by Merchant Banks etc…to promote Olympic Sailing into local schools NOW!! This project aims to create one hundred Youth Sailing Clubs, the training of 1000 junior sailors and the purchase of 1000 Sailboats for the use by Students in the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Regatta. I am wondering, will this boats be "Optimists", we will have to wait and see.
Here in Almeria, we are looking forward to the extension to the Garrucha Marina, where we hope there will be some facilities for our young dinghy sailors. Are there any Banks or Businesses out there willing to help promote the Sport of Sailing?
Back to 2002 and our Boat Show! I put on display, the Plans of a 40ft Sailing Canoe with an outrigger to stabilize it. Not difficult to build the Polynesians were doing it Centuries ago. I can see two of them racing on the Cuevas Canal or in the Mediterranean, with 20 young sailors involved. How do you build a 40ft Canoe? In 10ft sections, it could be transported to the Mar Menor or where ever. Interested? Come and talk to me.
The Infanta Cristina Sports Club in Los Alcazares, Mar Menor, is the venue of the Spanish National Catamarans Championships this weekend, the 1st of June. Houri and I will be there on Saturday to meet with some of the competitors.
Come and have coffee and chat with us any Sunday morning, 11am onwards.
Oh! I gave a name to that Canoe, it was "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" you should remember that!
Take Care
