Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 19th March 2008
Bang that Drum; Ring that Bell, Blow that Horn. Who was the "Winner" of the Easter "Cruiser Regatta" out of Garrucha. Our own "all together our very own" Frank and his 36’ Beneteau "Erisana". With a crew of Santa Irene dinghy sailors, Vic, Jim and Alan, Frank is an ex GP 14 sailor. This was a cruising boat beating some formula 1 racing boats so lets raise a glass to Frank and the Santa Irene sailors.
It's been a good couple of weeks with every one on the water. The Hobie Cats have been testing the waters of los Conteros, Villaricos near the Chiringito on the playa. Last Sunday, gave Frank, Vic and Jim, a chance to revisit the Fish Farm, but this time sailing their Hobie 16's . The day before, Saturday, it was in the Beneteau 36.
Could this be the Playa where the Cats will settle? There is the small harbour near by if it was needed, plus it's not too far from the Mono Hulls sailing out of Garrucha. Having said that it's an area, which needs to be used with respect on the not so good days. Perhaps that goes with out saying but I have a reason to say it. Terreros must still be favourite for a Big Cat Meeting and who knows the future!!
I remember Highcliffe Sailing Club in the 1963 when there was just a few of us sailing off Mudeford beach into Christchurch harbour, down the Run out to the open sea. 8 years later with a new Club House we were organising Open Meetings for National Championships for up to 80 boats.
Las Sunday the 16th was another good day in the office at Garrucha. A dozen of us were sailing in various boats enjoying a nice comfortable breeze. Easter Sunday will be a B.B.Q day, on the los Conteros playa. Perhaps we can get back into the habit of a B.B.Q on the last Sunday of the month, then you will know when to bring your sausages. Thinking about it, on a good day, we could race from Garrucha to the playa at Villaricos, it's less than 5 nautical miles.
For you information, Terreros is about 14nm and Aguilas 19 or 20 nm. So what is it from Garrucha to Carboneras? 13nm – and Macenas playa? More or less 6nm.
Remember the Olympics are only 4 months a way and the sailing venue is Qingdado China, too far for us to travel. However the Volvo Ocean Race will start from Alicante in November, we should be able to visit that.
Formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race, which always started and finished in the UK. It's much different now. The start, Alicante, to Cape Town, then on to Kochi (India), Singapore, Qingdao (China), Rio Dejanero, Boston, Galway (ire), Stockholm and the finish will be in St. Petersburg (Rus.) in 2009 after about 37000 nm. So we have lots of sailing news to look forward to.
Vic will be pleased to see you on the Los Conteros playa and I'll be happy if you call in for a chat at the slipway Garrucha any Sunday morning after 11am
