Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 21st June 2006

Sorry you haven’t seen many colourful sails lately, the weather gods are against us – white water everywhere, good for the surfers, no good for launching dinghies and with the size of the waves a problem for the catamarans too.

For the first time, Mojacar has laid the yellow marker buoys denoting a swimming zone “No Boats” they are off the Playa del Cantal and most of the playa. I did understand we were to be allocated a boating channel. Is the Ayuntamiento trying to tell us something? We will get an answer from them in due course. At this moment I’m not sure where we will be launching from- Please! Phone me on my mobile if you want an update.

So very little sailing for us, but a very different tale at Rutland S.C., that’s on Rutland water, east of Leicester and near Melton Mobray – where the pies come from. More than 290 young sailors between the ages of 8-14 years, were there to celebrate the 20th birthday of the RYA, Eric Twinanie Championships. What a sight that must have been! 12 year old Tomas Pain who won the Optimist class said he was looking forward to the Nationals, 13 year old Oliver Loughead, “Topper Class” wants to go to the “Worlds” at Lake Garda, 14 year old Emily Mackenzie hopes to go to the Mirror Worlds. While cadet sailors Joanna Freeman and Holy Francis, 14 and 12 year olds, hope to finish in the top 15 of the forth coming World Championships. These youngsters started to sail in Optimists, two when they were only 7 years old. With all the young families moving to this area, there must be an “Oppie Sailor” out there?

Sailing is very much a ‘Hands on’ thing, a bit like riding a bike. All you need to know is where is the wind coming from, the sails will drive the boat, you will steer it with the tiller and balance the boat if necessary and you’re away! It’s a sport for the 8 to 80 year olds (and younger and older) a fun sport for all the family. Tell me if there is a pond or any sheltered water near you.

Are there any adventurers out there? Two young lads, 19 year olds are sailing their 18ft Hobie Catamaran around the entire coastline of the UK, a distance of near 2,000 nautical miles. They set off from Poole in Dorset to sail anti-clockwise on the 2nd June and hope to complete the journey in one month. Check their progress, look at www.britcat.co.uk

We need a powerboat crew to man our safety boat it’s a 4m RIB, you can have an occasional sail with us if you want to, give me a call.

There is a topper Sailor out there from Aguilas and beyond, could it be Roger – Sorry I missed you. I need your phone number – will you call me.

The Volvo Ocean Race will have finished in Gothenburg when you read this, the winner, the Dutch Boat ABN AMRO 1, who as I write are 28pts in the lead. 2nd & 3rd will be Pirates and Brasil with only 4pts separating them.

Not sure where we will be sailing from, so keep in touch

Take care
