Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 12th January 2006
I would like to take you back to a night to remember, our Annual Dinner and Dance at the Puntazo Hotel, I sincerely hope it will be repeated next year, as it was an excellent venue. The food was superb and so was the entertainment from the “White Ladies”, while we enjoyed ourselves dancing the night away. Many said, “We’ll be here next year” so I’m looking to the future. The bouquet (had I bought one!) should have gone to Irene Benson for organising the event, with a little help from Vic, I’m sure!
I recently stopped for coffee at Hathaway’s Café Bar, where I met Charlie, she had sailed with her school in the South of France (what a life!) and Dave who has been aboard many yachts. They thought they needed to be boat owners to sail with us. No – we have boats to spare. You don’t need a boat or know how to sail, we’ll show you the way and be happy to do so. Come and spend a month with us – if you enjoy our company - join us, we have a BBQ at the end of each month.
There was some good sailing on the 17th and 18th December, Saturday we were sailing with Frank in the Garrucha Race, the Beneteau was reafed down in 21knts of wind – top of F5. The Hobie Cats and dinghies enjoyed a good day on Sunday. Boxing Day saw “Dos Amigos”, the Drascombe (Tan sails) sailing in a fresh breeze with Terry and myself, the only boat on the water.
New Year started with a very gusty wind, we had a visitor from Rutland Water, William with his laser, he’s a big lad and knows what he is doing, Susan and Richard (Mum and Dad) were there to help him launch.
We were on the water again on Monday 2nd “Dos Amigos” with Claire, Dermot, Terry and myself, the two Hobie 16’s with George, Helana and Frank and Vic. Perfect sailing conditions with lots of sunshine, what a start for the New Year, - as I’ve said come and join us.
A few words about the big boys, the 1st leg of the Volvo Ocean race, Sanxexno, Spain to Cape Town was supposed to be a relatively slow and trouble free leg! The wind speed on the first night topped 50knts and had a huge effect on the entire leg,
