Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 28th September 2005

We are back in business again, last Sunday the 18th saw Vic flying a hull on the Hobie 16 with Steve as crew, Paul and Lynne were enjoying the fresh F3 and young Charlie and Lee spent most of the day on the Topper, while Roger was looking for even more wind on his sail board. Next week I should have a Pasinaca on the playa for those that prefer a more sedate sail.

The Hobie 14 and 10ft Kid Kats are looking forward to getting their hulls wet too, so you had better get down there. Thanks to Vic and his family, the safety boat has had a refit and looks good, the hull was professionally repaired over at Carboneras. If there is anyone out there, willing to help us as a safety boat driver come and talk to us, we now have two boats, pity we haven’t storage space near the playa.

On Friday 16th September, Vic Irene and myself went to visit the “Infanta Christina” Sailing club at Mar Menor, Murcia, where they held the Spanish Catamaran Nationals, what a spectacle! With so many Cats and we met up with some of the friends I had made, two weeks earlier in Benidorm. It’s a club we would like to visit again, it’s a 2-hour drive with Vic doing the driving, thank you Vic for a grand day out.

News from the UK, our congratulation must go to 33 year old Hilary Lister, the first Quadriplegic sailor to cross the English Channel, using the breath-powered sip and puff method with tubes connected to switches which control sails and steers the boat, Hilary has Reflex Sympahetic Dystrophy, she only took up sailing two years ago to boost herself confidence. Well God Bless Hilery, I’ve seen your smiling picture.

There are a lot of new dinghy classes, but the good old Mirror dinghy has just held it’s World Championships in Ostersund, Sweden a two hour drive from the Arctic Circle, that would keep you cool, there were 101 boats. The first two places went to Ireland, that will please Dermot, yes he’s back to entertain us, the next four places went to GRB. There are two Mirrors’ over here – one at the Embalsa Negratin at Baza and Jim McGovern has one, soon to be part of the club. The sail numbers are now well over 70,000.

Make a note of Dom Mee an ex Royal Marine with plenty of nautical adventures to his name. The first boat he sailed was a 14ft Bosun in Exmouth. He is now using a much-modified Bosun for his latest adventure to cross the Atlantic in his ocean going “Kite” Vessel. He left St John’s Newfoundland on the 18th August, we hope he is through the Flemish Gap that’s the area made famous by the film “The Perfect Storm”. He aims to finish in Exmouth, we wish him well, you can follow him on his website www.dominec.co.uk and you can follow us on our website or better still visit us on the Playa del Cantal opposite Mr UK, I’ll be there 11am Sunday all day.

Oh! Sorry, you didn’t get a sail on Sunday Finn, we were a bit short handed and it was lumpy. Finn tells me he is now 8 and he’s enthusiastic, so we need to look after him – he’s going to get a copy of the video “Awesome Aussie Skiffs” – “good on ya cobber!”

Take Care
