Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 22nd June 2005

Our 3rd anniversary passed by on the 1st June, we were going to celebrate it with a race on Sunday the 5th June, so Paul and myself laid an Olympic triangle course with three buoys. Start line just off the playa del cantal, the windward mark straight out to sea and the wing mark opposite the Trufi bar, good for spectators – and back to the start, all marks to port, a simple set of Santa Irene racing rules and off we go! Sorry there was no wind, but it was a good exercise and I hope we’ll be doing it every Sunday. There’s nothing like racing to improve your sailing skills.

At the end of the day Lynne and Paul did get round twice in the 470, so we can say they are the trophy winners for the year. But it was Lynne that supplied the Champagne – as she said our anniversary should be celebrated in style, Thanks Lynne, we will certainly do that again next year, it was a great end to a great day. If anyone wants a copy of the Santa Irene racing rules, just ask!

Another day to celebrate was the 8th, when with the help of Big Jeff, and Brian we launched “Dos Amigos” the Drascombe long boat cruiser, which Terry and myself have been working on for the past few months. It’s now on Garrucha marina, the last pontoon opposite the Rincon Restaurant. If at any time you can’t find me, I’ll most likely be sat in the cockpit, dreaming of “Dos Amigos” in the Caribbean.

I really shouldn’t say that – we already live in the corner of enchantment.

Last Sunday, Terry, Julie and myself sailed her to the Hotel Indalo where we decided to “Heave-to” and stop for lunch. There was a good force 3 blowing but all was quiet and serene on Dos Amigos.

The lads and lassies were on the water from the playa del cantal and enjoyed the good breeze.

You will remember the Mediterranean Games start on the 24th, canoeing at Cuevas on Sat & Sun 25th/26th then rowing on the 30th and 1st & 2nd July – its on your doorstep.

I will be at Club de Mar, Almeria to talk to as many people as I can and watch the 470’s and Lasers Racing, that’s from the 25th June to 2nd July. I hope there will be quite a bit on Spanish TV.

Please note on Sunday 17th July, there will be a BBQ and Car boot sale in aid of the club, 12 midday until 4pm, please come along and support your local sailing club, you may get a sail too.

Come and talk to us – Sundays on the Playa del Cantal opposite Mr UK.
