I had an early hot bath on Sunday 20th November, there was a big, big swell rolling in on Playa del Cantal, so we moved to “Martins” playa opposite the Pueblo Indalo Apartments. Yes, we could launch there, in fact the 470 did, also the Hobie wave and Hobie 16, but it was a day for possible breakage, so after lunch we put our boats away and finished early. Nevertheless, we now know we can get boats and cars down there. One day I fancy we should have a fun race or mini cruise between the two breakwaters.
Then on Sunday 27th November our BBQ day, the sea was perfect, we could have done with a “tad” more wind, as Vic would say, but it was a grand day. Seven boats were racing around our triangular course. There were 2 Hobie 16’s, the Hobie Wave, 470, Laser, Topper and Pastinaca. Who won? Sorry I’ve no idea, I was only the race officer with the hooter, flag and watch – on handicap I guess, Fritz in his laser. Paul will sort results. To assist me at the finish were my old pals Wendy and Basil – that’s Wendy Cox who used to serve us at Arthur’s Supermarket! – Happy Days
So what a show, all those sails, but the best show of all
was a pod of Dolphins that went right through the fleet. After all that we had
our BBQ with Jim cooking beef burgers, sausages and chicken and Helena serving
piping hot fish stew, then to top it all we had a large slice of stollen cake
from Lynne.
What a day – I slept like a babe!
Now some sailing news from Spain, the Volvo Ocean Race got under way with the start of the first “In Port Race” in Sanxenxo, Spain. Have you ever been there?
The royals were in force, Race Patron, Prince Carl Phillip was on the Swedish boat “Ericson” which won. Infanta Doña Cristina of Spain was on “Black Pearl” with Paul Calyard as skipper, finished 3rd and HRM King Don Juan Carlos of Spain was 4th on “Movistar”. Don’t get reading too much into these results, there was less than 8kts of wind – not the conditions they will have to face in the race around the world.
Its made me think perhaps we should invite the Royals down here, it may help to get a Cabin!
Two Spanish Tornado Cat sailors Fernando Echavauri Erasun and Anton Paz Blanco along with our own Ellen Macarthur have been awarded “Sailor of the Year” titles for sailing achievements during the 12 months to 31st August 2005, At this present time Ellen is taking part in the 2005 Transat Race.
To our members and friends of Santa Irene, I wish you a
very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year, and good sailing for
all of us!
