Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 15th March 2006

It was another morning at the Trufi Bar, Sunday 5th March, after that F8 gale on Saturday, even the Almerian ferry had problems trying to enter the Port.

The Sunday before that we went ahead with the Boat Show, the weather could have been better, but Vic’s hot punch and the comradeship of friends and new faces made it a great day.

Salvador was demonstrating the “Patin”, to Mario who sails a “Snipe” and it’s here in Mojacar, we hope to see it on the water soon. So that’s another edition to the family, the length is 15’6”, a good boat to sail and race, there is a fleet at Club de Mar in Almeria.

I had a chat with Nick Borridge, he’s a “Phantom” sailor, it’s an interesting single—hander and been around for 30 years, now the class is beginning to grow. It’s a good size being 14’6” LOA with a sail area of 9.76m², the same weight as a Laser but faster. Ideal for you big lads. Nick’s son Goven a Laser sailor finished 6th in one of the nationals for the Laser Radials with 104 boats taking part. He is now in the Welsh RYA Youth Squad and could be another young man with a future in sailing. Did you read the Argan Bailey story in Lifestyle?

This week, I’ve been to the Club Nautico de Aguilas, they have a sailing school within the marina. As you know Aguilas is in the Province of Murcia. Their education system has already promoted sailing, as a sport for youngsters. They allow children from their schools to take a course in sailing, this they can do at the sailing school of the C.N. Aguilas, and if I understand it correctly they “live in” for one week. Aguilas is the ideal teaching location, with so much sheltered water. I believe on the 18th of this month, a group of youngsters from Garrucha school will be there, so maybe other schools in Northern Almeria could apply to attend these courses. If you are an interested parent ask your local school to phone 968 411 951, Club Nautico de Aguilas, re the courses. I will visit during the time the Garrucha school kids will be there.

Our trio of Frank, Vic and Paul were in the Aguilas cruiser race on the 25th Feb, there were 35 starters in a very breezy race with a number of retirements. Our intrepid trio completed the race, they didn’t make the podium, but I believe they finished in a very credible 6th Place and were back on duty for the Boat Show on Sunday morning.

In the Volvo race, Moviestar crossed the line in Wellington, just nine seconds ahead of ABN Amro – winning leg 3. However now it’s the Southern Ocean and a long and potentially dangerous leg to Rio De Janero.

We look forward to seeing you on the Playa del Cantal, opposite Mr UK, every Sunday
