Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 1st March 2006
I hope the start of 2006 has been good for you – for me it needs to get better. No Sunday sailing for three weeks but last Sunday the 19th saw an improvement in the weather. Salvador’s “Patin” cat was out, testing the waters of southern Spain. There was a lot of interest in her, she is unique, with no rudder, a “fast cat” in the hands of Salvador.
We are building a fleet of Hobie 16’s, soon there will be four in the club – cats are ideal for launching off the beach. Another boat to come our way is a small sailboat, the 350, it has been loaned to us by Jose Casanova, our sincere thanks to Jose – it will soon be on the water.
Also, on the 19th, Argan Bailey arrived back in Mojacar – having been sailing in the Caribbean for the last two months. Young Argan is a “Yachtsman” and next month will be returning to co-skipper a 70ft sloop, which is on charter in the Eastern Mediterranean. If you want to know more about Argan, read this months Lifestyle Magazine.
While I’m writing this, it’s Carnival week in Aguilas with a regatta on the 25th for cruisers. We hope our own Frank with his 36ft Beneteau will make the start line with Vic as Bowman. There could be about 40 cruisers – they will arrive from Mar Menor, Cartagena, Mazarron, Garrucha and Aguilas. Quite a spectacle – I would guess.
Now for the Volvo Ocean Race, it looks like “Double Dutch” with ABN Amro One, first in Melbourne and ABN Amro Two, second. This was the second leg of the round the world race with the VO70s setting new speed records for monohulls. Leg 3 is a short but tricky sprint from Melbourne to Wellington, New Zealand via the Bass Straits which has a fearsome reputation – Good luck to them all.
Back to Mojacar and the future – April should see us with a cabin on the beach, we would be interested to know of a 6m x 2.5m steel storage container, are they available here, cheap!
We look forward to seeing you on the Playa del Cantal,
opposite Mr UK, every Sunday
Take Care
