Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 25th January 2006

We’ve had a few cold week-ends, never the less the stalwarts have been on the water, Lynne, Paul, George, Vic, Frank, Jim and Sheryl.
Terry Demot and our Spanish friends, Lisa and Salvador, who are now introducing their friends to sailing, it’s always good to see new faces. On the 15th we had six boats on the water, which included “Dos Amigos” the Drascombe. If you want to sail in style – well you don’t get your feet wet, talk to Terry, he serves tea and coffee and we are now working on the Galley.

Some weeks ago, I told you about the “Patin”, a catamaran – with out a rudder, there are hundreds of them up in Cataluña they are unique to Spain. There is also a fleet down at Santa Maria, Cadiz. Our own Salvador is owner of a “Patin” and this week, after a round trip to Barcelona, it is now with us. It must be near 6m long, but with only a 1.6m beam – there is just one builder and they are all wood, it looks good. If you want to know more, come and talk to Salvador. The “Patin” could be ideal for all you sail-boarders out there – you wouldn’t fall off so often, it has two hulls!

Would you say we are half way between Cataluña and Cadiz –it’s just a thought would the Ayuntamiento and Best Hotels sponsor an “Open Meeting” for the “Patin” here in Mojacar? I think we should ask them! It’s what I would call “Nautical Tourism” and it can be out of season.

If you are looking for wetsuits, try ‘Decathlon’ stores they are the cheapest, they start at 29 Euros. The nearest store is Alicante – that’s the second turning on the right after the airport turnoff. Vic tells me a new store has opened near Malaga airport – Its ok if you are visiting the airport.

In an effort to make it known to YOU, that you are more than welcome to sail with us. We will hold a Boat Show on Sunday 5th February at Playa del Cantal opposite UK – where we normally sail from. There will be a BBQ and mince pies, if I can find time to make them. Please come and talk to us. Of course, this is subject to the weather – don’t expect us to be there if it’s snowing.

Take Care
