Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 25th May 2006

Who remembers the beginning of ‘Santa Irene’ it was 4 years ago, 2002 the 29th and 30th of April. We had a Boat Show in the Artisian Centre, ‘we’ being the Penfold family – Sharon, John, Analisa, Marian and some good friends to help me. On show were 9 boats, 2 Mirror’s, 2 Cadets, which I had brought over from the UK, 4 Optimists and a Firefly, well we had to start somewhere. Our good friend Petter of the Advertiser was there to record the event as he did this year, when we celebrated our 4th Anniversary on the Playa Del Cantal. Yes, I know we were a week late on the 7th May, but it was a great day. Lisa of Alcoy, Alicante cooked superb Paella, in my new 76cm Paella pan, on an open fire. The lads! had some fun trying to assemble a Russian Inflatable catamaran, the instructions are in Russian. This was a gift from John Hampton of Cortijo Grande. The lads must have got it right, because later that day our intrepid Duo, Salvador and Layo took it on it’s maiden voyage – well in Spanish Waters. At the end of the day we had a champagne toast – ‘To The Future’.

Do you think I should arrange a visit to Russia? No! It’s too cold. I do know a charter fleet of 30ft Wharran Cats down in Thailand- we would enjoy that more – see www.multihullpages.com it’s our friend David Milner of Vera Playa.

Last Sunday, launching was a problem with the swell. What we need is a good launching party, like 4 strapping young fellas who want to build up their muscles, get brown and attract the girls or vice a versa!

Lyn and Paul went to the Garrucha Slipway to launch the 470 and sail down to us with the spinnaker flying. The Garrucha cruisers were out with a race to the Villaricos fish farm to celebrate San Isidro. We have a small cruiser a ‘Micro Cruiser’, I’m sure it would do well on handicap, we just need a bit of help to tidy it up and a hand to launch it at the slipway. Perhaps we could join in the Saturday racing at Garrucha, representing Santa Irene.

I’ve been reading about ‘Tussock Cruising Holidays, the cruising area is around the Turkish coastline, the boats, wooden classic’s with skipper and 8-16 berths, it all looks good to me, visit www.tussockcruising.com or phone the UK on (0) 20 8510 9292, email info@tussock.co.uk. If you do, mention Santa Irene and sailrway.com.

The Volvo Ocean Race – As I write, the boats will be in mid-Atlantic heading for Portsmouth. The overall leader on points is the Dutch boat ABN AMRO1, but moving up is Telefonica Movistar the Spanish boat with Andrew Cape, navigator and Pirates of the Caribbean with Jules Slater, navigator both from the UK. We wish them luck

Come and have a chat -Sunday on the Playa del Cantal, opposite Mr UK.

Take Care
