Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 30th December 2007
Well here we are at the dawn of 2008, Olympic year. I hope you got what you wanted for Christmas – for me a pair of slippers along with good health, happiness and living in this corner of enchantment – what more could we ask for? How about a signed copy of “Come Hell or High Water” by Claire Francis, my 1970`s pin-up girl. Yes it was in my Christmas stocking, a present from my dear friends Ann and Robin who look after our website. Remember to look at it if you want to keep up-to-date with Club News or weather forecasts – you can get a 5 day forecast from the BBC. Our last couple of Sundays – sailing in almost perfect weather, have been a great start to the new year. The Hobie Cats sailing from the Playa to San Juan de los Terreros thought they were in the Caribbean.
While the Monohulls have been sailing from the slipway in Garrucha and at the end of the day the crews relaxing in the clubhouse, the small bar nearby with Christina serving us coffee. Sorry it will be closed during January – we look forward to seeing our smiling Christina back in February.
If you would like to try “Cat” sailing, the lads and lasses at “Terreros” will be happy to talk to you or call Vic on 950 529 399. The same goes for any Monohull sailors or wannabe sailors call in at the slipway or phone me on 950 475 157. The aims and objectives of the Santa Irene Club de Vela was to bring “dinghy sailing” to the Almeria Levante region, this is slowly but surely happening.
The nearest club which sails and races dinghys every weekend is “Club de Mar” Almeria Capital. I visit the club often and look forward to the day when we can visit them as a club taking with us some dinghies they don´t usually see. I´m sure any Saturday would be a good day, normally it´s their training and practice day.
Time for me to bang the drum! We are looking for new members, for less than the price of 2 coffees a week, you can be a member – you don´t need a boat or how about a social member at 20 euros for the year? Do me a favour ask your neighbours if they know about the sailing club. This weekend I will be away flying the flag in Benidorm. There is a regatta for the “Optimists”, it´s called the 3 Kings Regatta and organised by the Valencia Sailing Federation.
There will be well over 100 Oppies taking part, if you have never seen these kids aged between 8 to 14 years old rigging their boats and sailing off, then you are missing out.
Soon I´ll be talking to the Alcade of Cuevas about using the “Canal” which was built for the Mediterranean Games, i´ts ideal to start kids sailing in Oppies – I have four of them. If there is anyone out there willing to help me in this endeavour I´d be pleased to hear from you. Remember Sunday mornings at Terreros or Garrucha slipway.
I look forward to seeing you.
Take Care
