Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 11th October 2006

Hola!

Had you been around on Sunday evening the 1st October, you would have heard me singing in the bath – “What a day this has been” The perfect sailing day, when every one could get on the water, novices and experts. Trevor was first away with his Tideway, that lovely traditional sailboat then the Cats, pity there are still a few owners in the UK. Two Dutch lads rigged the Pastinaca. Had Terry been with us the Drascombe would have been out there to. As it was BBQ day, I wanted to stay on the Playa to say hello to the many new friends who came along.

Sheena who had never been on a sailboat before enjoyed her day on and off the water. Rosie and Steve were re-acquainted with sailing, the Dutch lads took the Pastinaca out, sorry to say they are now on their way back home, we’ll see them next year. Vic, Jim, George and Paul were taking new comers on the water. When the Dutch lads came in young Jeff took Sheena out on the Pastinaca.

On the water the lads and lassies decided to have a race – brilliant idea, with all those buoys out there to go around. Without doubt the best way of improving your sailing skills is to race around a course, so in future we will try and arrange it.

The BBQ just gets bigger with all sorts of delicious delicacies being cooked on hot coals. But we do need to improve our cooking arrangements, we could do with a second BBQ!

Our next beach feast will be on November 5th, possibly a BBQ and Paella, Nov 5th is also the day of the Fun Run, organised by Harmony Gym, you had better call in there and book yourself in, it’s a fun day! You can loose a few calories in the morning and put them back on in the afternoon if you visit us.

There will be many young people in the Fun Run, and I’ll be there to encourage them to take up our sport. To remind them they can earn their living in sport, remember the Argan Baily story. Argan took to sailing as a teenager and now at 21 years old, he is a Yachtmaster and skipper of a 70ft yacht in the Western Mediterranean – he sails with us whenever he’s home. I was reminded of this, when a young friend and his dad stayed with me last week. Young Simon Howell took to golf as a teenager, now at 20 years old, he is an assistant professional and in a few weeks will be a Golf Pro working at the Forrest of Arden Golf Club. He is a member of the Halesowen Golf Club, I’m sure they have helped him on his way – not forgetting his parents!

To the young people out there, I’m saying why not come and try sailing – in no time you could be a Monitor (teacher) of the sport or go on to be a Yachtmaster – ask Argan Baily the next time he is here.

Oh! Remind me to tell you about that Formula One Sports Boat – the Laser SB3 – 6 metres of fun and speed, a sail boat of course.

Hope to see you on the playa next Sunday, opposite Mr UK

Take care
