Are you up for a “Lark” she is good looking, lively and a lot of fun in the water, I’ve taken her out and she behaved beautifully, but she can be naughty too, fly the spinnaker and she will pick up her skirts and go!
The “Lark” sailing dinghy is 13’ 4” in old money or 4.07 metres long, a club boat and it’s for sale. This is a dinghy widely used by Universities, ideal for a young couple. At the Littlehampton S.C. Centenary Regatta last month the “Lark” was 1st on handicap, could do well in our racing when we get started. The designer Michael Jackson! That should add a few bob to its value. So what are you getting for your money, a first class sailing dinghy complete with road-trailer and lightning board. You can go anywhere we are looking forward to a visit to Mar Menor. Oh! The price, 350 euros - for the lot. I can’t believe it, you had better hurry. Phone me or Vic on 950 529 399.
What have we been up to – well there was a certain amount of confusion with the yellow buoys marking a swimming zone at the Playa del Cantal, that was a couple of weeks ago, so we took ourselves off to Vera Playa where there was good access to a boating channel. It was good sailing, at the end of the day as the wind picked up, I was out with Vic on his Hobie 16, and we were motoring. It’s good that as a club we are so very mobile. I’m pleased to say that after a trip to Ayuntamiento and a chat with the councillor for sport, the problem is resolved.
It was always intended to have a gap in the swimming zone, our area on the Playa del Cantal is designated as “Deportes Nauticas” So all’s well that ends well, and thanks to Senora Delores Alarco´`n Garcia who incidentally is a ‘monitor’ of the sport of sailing and fully appreciates our problems. So on Sunday the 25th we were back on the Playa del Cantal. This Sunday the 2nd July will be a BBQ, our last until September. I think of September, as being the start of our Sailing Season and I’m looking forward to it. As the year unfolds we should be having pursuit racing with our mixed fleet of boats. Having said that, our fleet of Hobie 16’s is growing fast. Consider this, a regatta for catamarans, most times they will launch off the playa, especially if we had a good launching party. We have friends in other Clubs, who I’m sure would visit us, we would need a marquee on the playa for the contestants and refreshments. The involvement of the Ayuntamiento would be essential, this is what I call Nautical Tourism, more use should be made of the ‘playground’ out on the water.
The sport of sailing is character building for young people, they are dealing with the elements. That reminds me – I am still looking for a pond or small lake where I can have a photo-session with the ‘Oppies’ – so keep looking.
Thanks to Cave Bar Jim, we now have the storage space we’ve been looking for, at 9 metres long it is ideal for masts etc.etc. When I went to measure it my assistants were Kenny and Mathew, 9 & 10 year olds, thanks lads - don’t think I could have done it without you. Could they be future ‘Oppie’ sailors- I hope so. Lots more news but I’m running out of time- think I need a secretary.
Hope to see you on the Playa del Cantal for a chat
Take care
