Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 30th August 2006

“Have you ever been over the sea to Ireland” I think that’s how the song goes, perhaps you’ll tell me, if I’ve got it wrong or better still send me the lyrics.

I arrived at Dublin airport on Wednesday 9th August, Dermot was there to meet me - thanks mate! We had time to drive through Phoenix Park. What a grand oasis it is within the city, there are gas lamps on the roads passing through the park – yes the real thing. Next morning we were off to collect Michael, another sailing instructor who has visited our club several times. Then out onto the open road to Baltimore on the southwest coast and the Drascombe Rally.

We were booked into the ‘Old Post House’ Bed & Breakfast, how Dermot managed that I don’t know – it was peak weeks. I can say we were more than happy with a good breakfast to set us up for the day. Thanks to Mrs Walsh and the ladies, we’ll be back again.

That evening we met most of the Drascombe owners and the rally organiser, Jack O’Keeffe and to my surprise he knew Mojacar, he was over in July visiting his sister who has an apartment there – what a small world. So when I am back in September, I’ll give you a call, Catherine.

The meeting place for the sailors was ‘Bushes Bar’ opposite the quay and sailing Club, the Guinness was like velvet, so our evenings were spent there. The Glenans Sailing School is also in Baltimore, both Dermot and Michael were teaching there at one time, so we were forever meeting friends. Must mention Trisha and Siobhan, both sailors and good company, except Trish spoke so fast, I didn’t always know what was going on! But it was good with my two companions, Dermot and Michael, I’ll be visiting Ireland again.

I’ve had a few phone calls on my Spanish mobile since being here – I’ll be in touch when I get back Mid September. I think we have another Hobie 16 on our doorstep.

What’s the weather doing here today – here in the English Midlands, its Summer, Sun, Cloud and Rain!

Take care
