Did I say I was looking forward to Good Friday and the Easter Regatta in Garrucha? Well we sat on “Erisana” having crossed the startline waiting for the wind, after an hour or so the rain came – and the race was abandoned. I raced home to light the fire! No wind on Easter Saturday at the start but it did arrive and the nine Cruisers had a good race around the fish-farm and back to Garrucha, pity it wasn’t two laps. Oh! Our Spinnaker went up and down like a dream, perhaps because I kept well out of the way. We finished in the middle of the fleet and were very happy with the day. Easter Sunday, very little wind but a good B.B.Q. on Playa Cantal where Lindy and Frank were celebrating their Grandson’s 1st birthday. It was the same last Sunday but a few of us were on the water, including my two new friends, who arrived a couple of weeks ago thanks to Rosie and Ken. They follow the Drascombe wherever she goes and are likely to come along side when there is no wind about. Oh! I didn’t tell you I have two Ducks, look out for them the next time you see “Dos Amigos” our Drascombe.
We may be having problems with no wind, just think what it’s doing for the Americas Cup in Valencia. The eleven boats competing for the right to challenge “Alinghi” the holder of the Cup have now started match racing for the “Louis Vuitton Cup”. It should have started on the 16th April but the first two days have been cancelled – no wind. The final for the Louis Vuitton Cup will be on the 1st to the 12th June when the fleet has been reduced to two boats. The winner will be the first boat to get five wins, who will then take the Louis Vuitton Cup and the right to challenge “Alinghi” for the Americas Cup that will take place between the 23rd of June to the 7th of July. If you want to watch it – there is a spector boat service operating, or you may know a millionaire friend with his super yacht moored up in Valencia – there must be a few around here. I just wonder if we can get our Drascombe and the Ducks up there. On shore there could be a big screen in the Americas Cup Park. That reminds me, we haven’t a “Park” in Mojacar, now there’s a question you could put to the wanna-be counsellors of Mojacar.
Back to Santa Irene, our two new Spanish members, Layo and Rogelio are looking for two Lasers – Nick may bring over a super-fast Laser. Our 17ft 6in Osprey could be on the water at the end of May, so could a Wafarer and Mirror dinghy. Our Hobie Cat fleet is growing, we now have five. I’m hoping someone will present me with a Snipe, I want to get back into racing again. You should come and join me, if you are a bus-pass holder it will keep you young and if you are a youngster it will be a sport to last a lifetime!
Look at our website, give me a call, or see me at the slip-way in Garrucha, Sunday morning or visit the Playa del Cantal opposite Mr. UK – that’s if it’s not raining as it is now!
Take care
