Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 13th December 2007
Well – “that was the week that was” a great week for the club. It all started on Sunday the 9th on the slip way. Eleven of us were looking forward to a quiet day sailing in the F2 that had been forecast but by eleven am it was blowing a near gale with the wind from all directions. The small fishing fleet which had been out early were scurrying back to port. On the pontoon I met “Beachcomber John” who writes those “fishy stories”. We were able to have a chat about his Morocco adventure, maybe we will sail over there one day.
Terry had a look at their catch and insists we should trail a line in future. I just wonder if we should try our luck at the Fish Farm, perhaps that’s not cricket! With the wind blowing in all directions, much of it offshore, it was not the day to go out. So we did a few jobs on our boats and then returned to what is slowly but surely becoming our Club House. It´s the room at the rear of the Restaurant Rincon, a quiet, cosy corner that is acquiring the atmosphere of a friendly sailing club – and there is a young smiling lassie who serves us coffee – what more could we ask for? The lads and lasses at Terreros were watching the weather too and met up with two Spanish Cat sailors – that´s good news, one sails an A Class Cat, you can´t miss it, the mast is so tall.
Then on Monday 10th it was our A.G.M. at the Puntazo Hotel. It was agreed that we continue to sail at both venues, Garrucha for the Monohulls, Terreros for the Catarmarans getting together for some social do´s like the BBQ and some “Serious handicap racing”. I hope one day to see having an “Open Meeting” inviting members from other clubs. Racing improves your sailing, there is nothing wrong with being competitive, my brother and I were racing dinghies for 20 years and we enjoyed collecting the silverware. Our two most successful dinghy racers are Nick Berridge and son but they are in the UK, we hope to see more of them in the new year.
Thinking of being successful in our sport of sailing – I´ve just met Helena, mother of Argan Baily a young man of 22 years or is it 23 this December? He is now a full captain of a 70ft charter yacht sailing in and around the Eastern Mediterranean during the Summer. At this moment he is flying around the Capitals of Europe, keeping and making contacts. If you are young and wondering what to do with your life – read the “Argan Baily Story” it´s on our website. I need to interview him again to bring the story up-to-date perhaps I´ll visit him in Turkey one day.
Saturday the 15th will be a big, big day, first the Club de Vela Garrucha, that´s the big boys, their last race this year. I´ve been invited to sail with our Frank on his 36 ft Beneteau, we just hope for a steady wind, a good start and finish not too far behind Miguel, it’s a handicap race, you could say Frank´s handicap is me, Victor and Big Allen, we will do our best and enjoy the day – but that´s not all! In the evening we have our Annual Dinner Dance at the Bellavista to look forward to. There will be over 70 of us enjoying the evening, if you´ve missed out, make a note of it for next year.
It´s my birthday on Friday the 21st – if you want to give me a gift, tell your neighbours about the Santa Irene Sailing Club. You could e-mail me, it would be nice to know there is someone out there.
To all our members and friends, I wish you a Happy Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
See you in 2008, Olympic Year!
Take Care
