Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 15th November 2007
Hola, it´s good to be back in the warm sun of Mojacar. Knowing I will see the sun light up my patio in the mornings and watching it set over the Sierra Cabrera in the evenings. Oh, and have someone to share it with – what more could anyone ask for. Perhaps a Laser SB3 racing out of Garrucha with Vic and Frank hanging on to the sheets! Well why not? As it was, the first job after five weeks in the UK was cleaning our “Drascombe”, Dos Amigos with the help of Houri and Dermot – taking her to sea – then just sitting in the cockpit with tea and my homemade cakes watching the world go by, you should try it, it´s called messing about in boats.
Things got a bit more serious on Sunday with Layo on his “Laser” good to see him back. Lynne and Paul with the “Laser 4000”, Alan and David “Wayfarer”, Jim “Solo”, Trevor Tideaway”, Chris and Marian in the safety boat keeping an eye on things, me with “Dos Amigos”, Vic and Irene, Tim and Paula were there to give us moral support, oh and it was lovely to meet up again with Dorothy Williams, ex-Hobie cat Sailor, I am sure she will be back with us soon. Our Hobie Fleet of five Cats were having a day off.
Now!! Some very important dates for next month. First the Annual General Meeting of the Santa Irene Club de Vela. It will be held at the Puntazo Hotel on Mojacar Playa on Monday 10th December at 8pm. Guests are invited – that´s you – it will give you an opportunity to discuss sailing in this area. That will be after the AGM. The other important date is the Dinner and Dance on Saturday 15th December at the Bellavista Restaurant on Mojacar Playa again at 8pm. Ticket price is 30 euros. It was a grand night last year and you will be supporting a sporting activity for all ages. And there´s more! Friday the 21st is my birthday – feel free to send me an e-mail or a donation towards that SB3, Sports Boat. It can be sailed 3 up or 4 up depending on the weight. So how many kids could you get in it? At the next Big Oppie meeting at Weymouth and Portland they should test it out and I would love to be there. For you sailors who havn´t put your toe in the water lately, I´ll remind you we have boats to spare. We have the Spanish 350 or Daffodil as Jerry calls it, the Pastmaca, Sailfish, Topper. But don’t expect to just step aboard, we need your help.
I still have the Kittiwake and four Oppies and Vic´s baby is the Osprey. Not forgetting the Mirco Cruiser which one day I hope we will be able to race along with the Garrucha Cruisers. They raced on Saturday 17th November and the next race will be Saturday 15th December.
News of the Barcelona World Race which started on November 11th. An enormous spectator fleet of over 650 boats saw the start of the race. Nine “Open 60´s” with a crew of two are competing. Did you see anything on TV – no neither did I. “Patience is a Virtue” said Irish sailor, Damian Foxall, friend on Dermots on board, “Paprec-Virbac” and all the crews needed plenty with the light winds, they didn’t expect to spend four days in the Mediterranean. Thursday 15th saw the leading boats tacking through the Gibralter Straits, Gate1. First was “Paprec-Vibrac” with Damian and Frenchman Jean-Pierre Dick. Second boat was “P.R.B.” they are in the atlantic on their way to the Canaries (gate 2).
The third boat through could be “Estrella Dam”. No word yet of Alex Thomson and “Hugo Boss”.
I´m looking forward to meeting you at our Dinner and Dance, phone Irene or Vic on 950 529 399 or e-mail Vic and Irene@avired.com or call me.
Take Care
