Hola Amigos, did you look at the photo of the new Garrucha Marina extension on our website? No! do it now or the next time you visit the cyber café: www.sailrway.com You will see the extension is a rectangle with space to accommodate another 400 boats mas o menos. The waiting list rose to near 800 before they closed it. When I was at sea on Sunday the 13th in Jim's Pelwist near the new breakwater, I thought it's looking good, but some thing was odd. Returning to harbour early as the wind rose to F.4 then F.5, I had time to look at the extension. Sure enough what would have been the Northeast corner has been chopped off, it has reduced the number of berths "Ours is not to reason why" but also it will reduce the income during future years. I'm still looking forward to "The Opening", which is scheduled for the end of 2009.,
Before we came in on Sunday, Tony & Jenny, in their big R.I.B.organised a race for the three racing dinghies, that were out. Lynne & Paul, on the "Laser 4000" Lynden in his "Europe" and Nic in his "Phantom". Wouldn't it have been great if there had been three 420's too, here I go again, dreaming. Not surprising the winner was Nic that much sort after Coach, back in Wales.
If you are from Wales you have some thing to be proud of apart from your Singers. You have one of the best coaching systems in the World. I recall writing about young Hannah Mills in 2003; she was the "Optimist" Girls World Champion in 2002, which she won in Grand Canaries.
Then there are the Mon brothers, Dyfrig, Eifion and Bleddyn from Anglesey, winners of National and World titles a fantastic sailing Family. While I'm at it I'll mention a few more young Welshmen. Tom Humphries, brothers David and Sean Evans, Huw Humphries and Max Todd. Cardiff's Tom Mallindine, Chris Grube, Stevie and Micky Beckett from Pembrokeshire. Dominic Breen-Turner and Sarah Williams, all these young people are sailing Champions. We must not forget the Welsh Coach of the year Tim Hall who is also the "Flying 15 World Champion". If you are Welsh and you know any of them, tell them they haven't gone unnoticed down here in Sunny Spain and John's message is " Pob lwc I chi gyd" yes I do know a bit of Welsh. You may see them named in the forthcoming London Olympics 2012 if they choose to go in that direction.
Lets not forget our Hobie Cat sailors who have been sailing off the Playa las Brisas, Villaricos, it's sheltered a little from those southerly winds. Call in for a chat with Vic, Jim, Peter and Graham, Oh! And the Girls.
By the time we get to the end of this month, there will be 100 days to the Olympics, which start on August the 8th to Sunday the 24th. There are 11 classes. In the past, we have been very successful but "Qingdad" is a very tricky venue, strong tides, light winds and big waves. The Paralympics start on the 16th of September to the 17th; this year there are 3 classes and 6 sailors. Much more Olympic news in the near future.
