At Last!! A full day of sailing on Sunday the 27th, it was only a light wind but what a pleasant change to those roaring gales. After our coffee at El Rincon a dozen or more of us were on the water out of Garrucha, while the Hobie Cats sailed off the playa Las Bbrisas at Villaricos.
The week before with F6 winds forecast 22 knots, we met for coffee then retired to Cabrera, there was an open day with the gardens on show, 3 of our members are from Cabrera. The Cats had a B.B.Q and Social day on the playa Las Brisas.
Our members Lydon and Debbie have found their 420, it did need a trip to Valencia but its made me very happy it's a class that is raced in many of the Andalucia Clubs. All we need now is for two or more of you to do the same thing and we can get down to some serious racing or just a pleasant sail along the coast. It's an international class with thousands of them around the world. Pippa Wilson the young Welsh sailor I wrote of previously was a National and European Champion, now she is part of the crew in the "Yingling" in the forthcoming Olympics.
Want to know more about the 420, visit www.420sailing.org, or come and talk to me; without doubt it's a class we should build up. I see my old club, Highcliffe S.C held a 420 Easter Regatta this year. News of that other boat I get excited about the Laser SB3, the 18 ft Sports Boat, that happens to be the fastest growing sports keel boat in the world. The 1st world Championships will be held at the National Yacht Club, Dublin Bay. The entry list, which opened in April, has now been closed!! With 120 boats entered and there is still 6 months to go; the start date is in November.
"Great News" from the French Olympic Sailing Week at Hyeres where the Olympic classes have been racing. Although GBR didn't have their full team there, we finished top nation with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. The best result was from our Paralympie team of John Robertson, Hannah Strodel and Stephan Thomas in the "Soner" class who won Gold with a day to spare. The other gold, was Nick Rogers and Joe Granfield," 470 class". Ed. Wright in the "Finn", Silver medal and Sarah Ayton, Sara Webb, Pippa Wilson in the "Ying ling" Bronze medal.
I see Sir Robin Knox – Johnston is to re-commission his legendary 32 ft Ketch Suhaili. It was 39 years ago 1969 he sailed around the World single-handed. That was the days of Paper charts and Sextants, Happy Days.
More Good News you can expect to see "Dos Amigos" our Drascombe back on the water next week after a refit, look out for our new tan coloured sails.
Remember – young or old or past it – come and talk to us if you want to sail.
Take Care
