Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 14th April 2010
April had started good for us. The first Sunday was a great day; we had five boats on the water which included Craig and his Hobie Cat, we look forward to seeing more of him and Amanda this Summer. Last Sunday the 11th didn´t look good, nevertheless they was a good turnout at the Club house! for coffee, the Bill was over 26 € NO! I don´t pay it.
A few of the Lads and Lasses tested the conditions at sea but it was a bit lumpy.
Jim was out there with “ Pelwist”, his small sailing cruiser.
Strange how thinks happen, I was going to write about Jim Barr and the fact that he sails more than any of us. Taking “ Pelwist” out not only on Sunday but Monday, Wednesday and Friday, not just for him self but for the benefit of others too. Many times his Crew are novices wishing to learn how to sail. Jim has the qualifications, he is an RYA Senior Sailing Instructor plus many more. During his time in the R.A.F he was part of the team representing our Sport of Sailing. He has sailed all over the World; the Far East, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, South, in the Falklands, North in Canada,in Europe and most places in the Mediterranean.
This morning, I received an email from Craig Wiswell, these are his words:” John thank you again for a great day on Sunday. Young George and myself had a great time on Jim´s boat, he was really good and clear on all aspects of sailing, safety and sea conditions, feel we had a great lesson on how to handle a bigger boat. Look forward to seeing you in May.”
My thanks to Jim, this is why the Club was created, not only so we could enjoy our chosen sport but also to introduce it to others. If you want to know more, come along for a chat.
For the price of a couple of coffee´s a week you could be a federated member of our Sailing Club.
Jim is not the only RYA Senior Sailing Instructor in our Club, so you will be in good hands if you join us; Me! I´m just an Old Sailor.
Back to boats, I´m looking for an inexpensive Magnum 21 Trimaran,. Yes, I know a couple of years ago, it was a Laser SB3 but now I want a Stable boat , that will stay upright, it´s fast too. Frank Cammas, skipper of Groupama 3, a Maxi Trimaran, it´s length is 105 ft has broken the “Round the World” record. Frank and his 9 strong crew set a new record of 48 days 7 hours 44 minutes the lap the Globe. A quote from him: “The image which stays with us is rounding Cape Hone, we were like Kids”. The average speed was 18.76 knots.
I´m looking forward to some good sailing conditions on Sunday; come and join us at “El Rincon del Puerto” our Club House.
Take care, John
