Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 11th June 2008
Sunday the 1st of June, the Clubs Anniversary and what a Day! The Hobie 16's were sailing off the playa Las Brisas at Villaricos. Terry and I were testing our new Main sail on "Dos Amigos" the 21ft Drascombe, what a difference its made. It reminds me of sailing my "National 12" racing dinghy back in the 50's.
Last Sunday the 8th was even better with our fleet of 4 Hobie 16's racing around the Fish Farm at Villaricos and me on the helm of "Dos Amigos" sailing to meet them, we didn't quite make it but 4 of us had a great sail. In the mean time back in Garrucha water's, Lyndon in his "Europe" had found a friend to play with, it was a Dolfin and was with him for 3 hours. Trevor and David, in the "Tideway" were taking photos. When we arrived back to Garrucha, our pet Dolphin joined us to swim in our Bow-wave, what a fantastic day!! See what you are missing,
I've had two enquires this week from Catamaran sailors, the Hobie fleet is slowly but surely growing. On the "Oppie" front the good news is that at a recent Council meeting in Cuevas, the decision was made, that the sports events at the Canal would be Rowing, Canoing, Sailboading, "Sailing" and how about getting the Disabled on the water!? The Paralympics will start on the 6th of September.
We are less than 50 days to the opening of the Olympic games on the 8th of August.
Lets hope we get some good T.V coverage of the sailing events at Qingdao. All our sailors have been there many times during this last year. We are Top nation in the sport of Dinghy sailing, so we look forward to the Olympics. The 3 girls sailing the "yngling" left for Qingdao this week. Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb already have a Gold medal from the Athens Olympics and I'm sure Pippa Wilson is looking forward to collecting her's.
In the "Fin" we have Ben Ainslie, the "Laser" Paul Goodison, Nick Roges and Joe Glanfield the "470"men, Christina Bassadone, Saskia Clark the "470" women, Penny Clark "Laser Radial", Steve Morrison and Ben Rhodes "49er", Ian Percy and Andrew Simpson "Star", Bryron Shaw RS.x and Nick Dempsey RS.x, these are Sailboads.
I'll remind you again to look at our Website and visit us at Garrucha slipway or Playa las Brisas, Villaricos -- Sunday mornings 11am.
Enjoy the Sun but take care.
