Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 9th September 2009
24 years ago when I arrived to live in Mojacar, the local rumour was that a Marina and hotel was to be built at Playa Macenas. I hear now there is to be a feasibility study for the Marina project, I hope it will not take another 24 years!!
The extension to Garrucha Marina, there is no news how the Berths will be allocated and there and there were twice as many applications, as there were berths.
Santa Irene submitted an application, we will need it for our Committee Boat. Last Sunday , we spent the day cleaning our Dinghies and tidying up our Dinghy Park, thanks to the Port Authority for allocating us the space. It was an enjoyable day, with plenty of banter and cups of coffee. All eyes are on the New Slipway, its not complete yet, it just keeps growing bigger!!
This week, we will be rigging my "Kitty Wake" a Gaff rigged Yawl, with tan coloured sails, Trevor with his "Tide way" will be back soon and with the "Drascombe" sailing, it will look like a regatta of "Classic Boats. We have a good mix of racing dinghies too. I hope to meet Howard this week end, he has a "Laser".
I guess most of you have read the news that 17 year old Mike Perham completed his "Solo" voyage around the World, when he finished at Lizard Point, Cornwall. Another teenager 17 year old American, Zac Sunderland, completed his trip around the World when he returned to California, USA. I hope one day they meet, there will be lots to talk about.
Girls, what are you doing? I see Dee Caffari, another "Solo" World voyager " has taken on an all Girl Crew, Miranda Merron, Sam Davies and Alex Sizer, to set a new record for sailing around Britain and Ireland. The new record time is now six days 11 hrs. 30min. the yacht was "Aviva" wich she sailed in the Vendee Globe.
There was an All Stars line up of skippers which included Ben Ainslie for the Round Island Race. However, it was Chris Draper, Skipper of the "Oman Extreme 40", Catamaran "Masirah"which took Line Honours. The over all winner on Handicap was the Folkboat "Tattarat", the Folkboat goes back years in design. It was a boat I always wanted to own, I will have to put it on my list of "items wanted".
You will be able to see 10 "Extreme 40´s" racing at Almeria Port on the 10 th, 11 th, 12 th of October , this is the last of the Series. After 5 previous Race Events in Europe, the two Oman Extreme 40´s are top of the Leader Board.
I look forward to seeing you at Garrucha on Sunday, take care.

Sailing News Sol Times - 2nd September 2009
Why am I so late writing my article this week? It´s because today I received my copy of Shane Cole´sPilot Book: the "ABC Guide to Sailing the Costas", it covers three Regions: Almeria, Murcia, Alicante: from Almerimar in the South to Denia in the North. Even if you are not a Sailor, you will find this book interesting, it covers in detail all the Ports and Marinas of the costas and it´s up to date, published in June this year.
I have quite a few "Old" Pilot Books, covering the U.K, France Portugal and Spain, so this was very refreshing. Not only do you get all the usual information, there is a beginners Guide to Weather, Maritime Rescue Services, Spanish History, English/Spanish Translations. With quite a few pages devoted to "Mar Menor" that unique inland sea, North of Cartagena. It´s approximately 12 miles long and 4 miles wide, with a dozen or so Clubs and Marinas and it is the Home Base of Shane Cole.

Remember, Almeria Port is the venue of the "Extreme 40 Catamaran Meeting" 10th to the 12th of October. These Big Cats will be racing In Port!! We don’t normally see Arab boats racing, if you are going to be there, you will see two. One of the Cats is named "Oman Massirah" with Pete Comming (UK) Skipper, the other is "Oman Renaissance" with Loick Peyron (France) skipper. Last weekend the Extreme 40´s were racing at Kiel in Germany and "Oman Massirah" recorded 3 consecutive wins.
There are 10 Cats racing and 6 Venues, Almeria is the 6th and last of the Series. At this time on the leader board, 1st is "Oman Massirah", 37 pts, "Oman Renaissance" is joint 2nd with "Gitana Rothschild" on 33 pts. We are looking forward forward to seeing them in Almeria, expect a Big Crowed, there were 50.000 spectators at Kiel.
Before all that excitement , we hope to be back sailing out of Garrucha, the Slipway is being constructed slowly!! We look forward to seeing you there, next Sunday morning.
Take care, it sould be cooler in September.
