Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 24th June 2009
It´s amazing how much fun we can have at the Cuevas Canal with just 5 boats. The good thing is the boats are on the water most of the day, with young and old waiting to go sailing. Last Sunday, June the 21st, we had the Topper, Solo, Europe, Optimist and Rubber Duck (Tender).
We also had Nick, a Welsh Champion to demonstrate how we should sail the Solo in the Gusty conditions. Danie, a young lassie, sailing on the lake for the first time, enjoyed the conditions, helming the Oppie and topper.
A long with our entourage of helpers, we thoroughly enjoyed the day, ending it as usually at Bar Meson for refreshments and chat.
The school holidays have started so what are the kids going to do all day? Perhaps most of the Lads will be imitating Ronaldo, I´m not sure what the Girls do. Why not involve them in Water Sports! Were? - At the Mediterranean Sports Center, at the Cauevas Canal, where there are 2 and 5 day courses in Kayaks and Canoeing throughout July an August. Make enquirers at Cuevas Town hall or at the Canal. Sailing courses are available for the next couple of months at “Over Limit”off Vera Playa in Optimist etc. Weather permitting. If you are interested contact Claudio on 657182849, he speaks English. Remember sailing can be a Family sport! I see there is Mirror Dinghy for sale, its advertised in Mr UK phone 610315325.
If you have a few “Bob”to spare, how about a holiday at “Minorca Sailing”. Look at the website:
The 25th of June will see the start of the last and 10th Leg in the Volvo Ocean Race, Stockholm to
St. Petersburg, Russia. Only 400 nautical miles, in light winds , any of the Volvo 70´s could win this Leg. The winner has already been decided, it´s Ericsson 4 but things could change between “Puma” and “Telefonica Blue” at this time in 2nd and 3rd places. Our favourite, Green Dragon, with Skipper Ian Walker should finish the Race in 5th place after 37.000 nm.
Hope to see you Cuevas,
Take care

Sailing News Sol Times - 17th June 2009
When Irish eyes are smiling ...... you can hear the lilt of laughter and hear the Angles sing. What a joy it was to entertain Odette and the two youngsters at Cuevas on Sunday the 14th.
All the way from Co. Cork, Odette had seen our website and thought we may be able to introduce the youngsters to sailing and of course the Cuevas Canal is the ideal place to do that. They had enjoyed the hospitality of the Puerto Marina Hotel, been involved in a Diving Course and were ending their week with us at Cuevas. Odette a competent dinghy sailor and diver was there to encourage them. We had our Rubber Duck (Dinghy), Oppie and Topper for then to test their skills.
We ended our day at the Meson Bar, enjoying some Irish “Craic” and hoping one day they will return. My sincere thanks to our “Supporters Club” who turn up not necessary to sail but help us with the boats. They need to be lifted in and out of the Lake – there is no slipway !! there was a good turn out on Sunday, I stopped counting when I reached 25.
The Mediterranean sport Centre as its known will be operating two and five day Courses in Canoeing, the price is 30 and 70 €, during July an August, you should visit the Canal and check it out.
The Volvo Ocean Race: with the 10th and final Leg of 400 nautical miles to St. Petersburg (Russia), Torben Grael (skipper) and “Ericsson 4” have secured Victory in the V.O.R. When they finished 3rd in Leg 9 into Stockholm. Now with 108 points they are 13 points clear of “Puma” with only 12 points left on the table. The verdict from the other skippers is they are worthy winners after 37.000 miles of racing .
The first 3 places could be “Ericsson 4”, “Puma” and “Telefonica Blue”. Leg 10 will start on the 25th , we should have all the result by the 27th. I guess my favourite “Green Dragon” will finish 5th overall.
In the Single Handed Transatlantic Race which started on the 25th May,from Plymouth, our new Star 22 years old, Katie Miller from Birmingham, my home town, finished on the 16th of June- Elapsed time 21 days, 19 hours 3 minutes. This Race is now known as the “OSTAR”.
Make a note of this date: 10th to the 12th of October, its the 6th and Last Event of the “Extreme 40ft Catamarans Race” which will be in Almeria Port, we will be there.
Come and chat to us at Cuevas Canal, Sundays from 11:15 am onwards.
Take care
