Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 12th November 2008
Hola, we´ve had some great sailing days, flat seas, light steady winds and the sun keeping us warm. I don´t always want to be flying off the top of waves, as exhilarating as it maybe.
The Catamarans seem to be settling into their new location at Vera playa, on the good days, we can join them or as it was last week, the Cats were visiting the Mono hulls at Garrucha.
I was on the water in "Dos Amigos", it did me good to see so many Sails and there will be more!
New Members are looking for boats, back in the U.K. That wouldn´t be a problem, lots of Classes to choose from, in my Dinghy year book, there are over 200, that includes Multihulls. Talk to us if you are looking for a small sail boat or " Vela Ligera".
Some one who was looking for a Gale and found too much wind was "Richard Branson" and his crew of 25 which included his daughter "Holly" and son "Sam". They were hoping to break the record of 6 days, 17 hours, 52min., 39 sec. For the Atlantic Crossing. The good ship "Virgin Money" a 100 ft. mono hull yacht crossed the Start Line at New York on the 22 of October. A Strong Gale soon found them and unfortunately it ripped through the Mainsail and Spinnaker, so they retired to the Bahamas and will try again later this year if the weather pattern is right.
A record that has been broken is "the 24 hour sailing record" for Mono hulls, it was 562.96 nautical miles. Ericsson 4 in the "Volvo Ocean Race", smashed the Record as it headed to wards Cape Town the finish of the 1st Leg around the world. In Gale force winds they clocked up 602 nautical miles in 24 hrs. Not bad for Wind Power. All 8 yachts are now in Cape Town ; 1st was Ericsson 4, 2nd Puma, 3rd Ericsson 3, 4th Green Dragon.
There are now 3 round the World Ocean Races taking place. The "Vendeé Globe" started from , France on November the 9th, 30 boats, the World´s toughest single handed race it´s Non Stop around the World. It was the race which made Ellen MacArthur a "star" in 2001/2. This time there are 7 British Skippers which includes two ladies: Dee Caffari skipper of "Aviva" and Samantha Davies skipper of "Roxy". It´s 24.000 nautical miles, on board will be every thing they may need, food, spares etc. "Good Look to them all".
Back to Santa Irene, the Annual General Meeting of the Club will take place on Monday the 1st of December at The Puntazo Hotel on Mojacár Playa at 8 pm. We will be looking back over the year, but more important planing for the future which is looking good. I have just returned from the Dinghy Park on Vera Playa, obliviously it will be the Social Centre for the Catamaran Fleet, if you would like to go Catamaran Sailing, talk to Victor any Sunday morning or phone 950529399.
Take care

Sailing News Sol Times - 12th November 2008
I am looking forward to this Sunday 23rd , we could see quite a few boats on the water, if the weather is right. The sailors from "Garrucha Club de Vela", will be racing their Big Boats, always nice to see those colourful spinnakers. Our Catamarans sailing off Vera Playa may follow them down to Villaricos Fish Farm and over take them if the wind is right. That also goes for Lyn and Paul sailing the "Laser 4000", it´s a flyer in the right condition and should "Dos Amigos" be going faster than normal, I´m motor sailing but don´t tell any one. November has been a good month so far, well, for me it has, no Gale Force winds and a nice flat sea.
On 2nd of Nov. the Catamarans were testing their new play ground and Dinghy Park! On Vera Playa. The Mono hulls out of Garrucha sailed down to greet them (or should I say up).
Last weekend the 9th, another good day, the Cats sailed to visit us at Garrucha, it was quite a colourful sight.
I´ve just looked at my emails, another enquiry about sailing, can I remind You, you are never too old or too young to go sailing. I have a lovely photo of 23 month old, Harriet, who arrived in Garrucha on a 32 ft sailing cruiser. Too Old ! I don´t think so, come and visit us.
Take care if you are thinking of crossing the Oceans, it´s getting a bit congested out there. October the 11th , the Start of the Volvo Ocean World Race, out of Alicante. October the 18th, the Start of the Portimáo Ocean World Race from Portugal. Last Sunday the 9th of November, 30 boats sailed out of Les Sables d´Olonne, France, the Start of the "Vendee Globe", the Race which made Ellen MacArthur a "Star" in 2001-2002.
I need to remind the Members, its our Annual General Meeting, on Monday the 1st of December at the Puntazo Hotel, Mojacár Playa at 8 pm.
Email me, phone me or meet me at Garrucha slipway Sunday morning for coffee.
