"England Expects" - that's because the U.K is Top Nation, in the Dinghy World. We know our lads and lasses will be doing their best at the Beijing Olympic Games. The maximum number of medals any Nation can win is 11.The U.K sailors Won 5 medals at both the 2000 and 2004 Games. This year there are 62 Nations competing, the United Arab Emirates for the first time. The venue for sailing is Qindao, not the sailors choice with the possibility of light winds and strong tides. ;there are 11 classes : Finn, Laser, 470, 49er, Star, Tornado, RS.X (sail board), and the Ladies, Yingling, Radial, 470 and RS.X (sail board ). Where could we hope to win a medal? the Finn, Laser, 470, 49er, Yinling, RS.X (Ladies). I'll be cheering on Penny Clark in the Radial; she is a Brumie and a member of the "Senior Service" (R.N) Oh! And she started sailing in an Oppie at the age of 4. We will have all the results by the 22nd of August, the Closing Ceremony will at Beijing on 24th and the start of the Paralympics is the 6th of September.
Now some good news from Home Waters, our trips to the Cuevas Canal on Saturdays have been very rewarding, at last we can get youngsters on the water Harriet, April, Katherine, little George. Don't get the impression Cuevas is for the youngsters only! It's for Teenagers, Adults and Dads Army, I have sailed the Topper many times, no waves to worry about. It's for experts too, Lydon is a regular visitor sailing his Europe, Paul of Laser 4000 fame has been out on the Topper... This Saturday the 9th, we hope to have a Mirror dinghy sailing with us.
One young teenager to join us is Robert Rea; and he is a natural, sailing is obviously his sport, we look forward to helping him to develop his talent. Last week the 2nd, we didn't sail at Cuevas because of the Andalucia Water-Ski Championships, so we gathered together at Garrucha on Sunday. It would seem the Sailors - Families and Friends were determined to have a "Fun Day". Helms and Crews were changing places even boats were been exchanged, the Oppies were on the water as was the Rubber Duck for the kids to play with. Trevor was doing trips around the Bay in his " Big Rib " and was on duty as safety boat. The "SunshineFamily" all six of them were there to help us enjoy the day, pity the younger members will be returning to the U.K soon. At the end of the Day- having a quiet drink at el Rincon, we met Chris and his family who are Mirror and Scorpion sailors, they had just arrived! "What a Great Day".
I'll remind you Sailing is a Family Sport, come and talk to us. Cuevas (Sat) Garrucha (Sun) Playa del Cantal (Thur.)
Take care

"It aint arf hot Mom", not to worry, only a couple more weeks or so and we'll be back in the mid 20's. Apart from feeling shattered I've had some great days. Sailing at the Cuevas Canal has made it for me, at last we can get some youngsters on the water Harrier, April, Katherine, little George... then last week teenager Robert Rea. The first time in a sail boat and he is a natural, he has the instinct to know just what to do. His first trip was in an" Oppie" then on to the "Topper". We may have a "Mirror" dinghy on the water this Saturday the 9th those Red Sails should look good. I wander how many of you remember "Barry Bucknall" the Co. Designer along with Jack Holt of the "Mirror". We couldn't use the Canal last Saturday (the 2nd), it was being used for the Andalucia Water-Ski Championships. So we had a Bumper Day at Garrucha on Sunday, with young and old- friends and families, enjoying the day. Helms and Crews were changing places and even exchanging Boats. The kids had the " Oppies " and Rubber Duck to play with. Houri was learning to Row! But could only go in a circle! But perhaps that was me. At the end of the Day – having a quiet drink at el Rincon, our neighbours on the next table were " Mirror " and " Scorpion" sailors – just arrived! What a great Day!!
I'm not a T.V. fan but I'll be watching the Box for the next couple of weeks. I hope they remember the Olympic sailors are down in "Qingdao", which I guess is about 400 miles south of Beijing. We topped the Olympic medal table in the 2000 and 2004 Games. We have the sailors capable of doing it again, we wish them the Best of Luck. In the sport of sailing there are so many variables. We will have all the Results by the 22nd of August.
Back to Santa Irene, I'll remind you Sailing is a " Family Sport " come and talk to us at Cuevas, (Sat) , Garrucha ,( Sun) or the Playa del Cantal, opposite Mr U.K. (Thursday).
Take care
