What a fun day, last Sunday the 17th ; there were 15 of us at the Cuevas Canal (Lake), it didn´t go according to plan, perhaps that´s what made it fun. We only had the Topper, Solo, Trevor´s “Laser Fun Boat”, an Oppie and a Sailboard but all of us had an opportunity to go on the water. The Sailboard was well used, it took some time for our ex Champion Terry to get it act together, it´s been 35 years since those days at Filey. After some spectacular dives off the the board, it all came back to him and the Hills were a live with the sound of Cheers from his audience of young Spanish lads and lasses who appreciated his determination and success, there is life in the Old Sea Dog yet.
I think I can say: we will be there for the next few Sundays, while we wait for the new slipway to be built at Garrucha. If you visit us at Cuevas, bring a chair and picnic. Make a “note”, there will be an Open Day at the Cuevas Canal on Sunday the 31st of May, which it our 7th Anniversary. I´m hoping we will be able to put on a Boat Show. If you have a Sailing Dinghy, bring it along or call me.
The new Garrucha slipway: we just need to have patience. I´m sure, there will be many local Spanish fishermen keen to see it built, we will leave it to them to do the Lobbing. We already have a Dinghy Park and good relations with the Port Authority so we keep “smiling and nodding”.
Another date to remember if you are visiting the UK, is Saturday the 20th of June. The biggest Race in the Yachting Calender, it´s the Round the Island Race. Last year, there were 1.875 boats with over 16.000 sailors competing. What other sporting event can compare with that? Only the London Marathon. It´s a 50 mile race, the record time in a “Multihull” is 3 hours 8min 29sec. and in a “Monohall” 3hours 53min 5sec. The Start time this year is 7:30 am. at Cowes, I of W.
News of the Volvo Ocean Race: The Volvo 70´s left Boston for Galway on Saturday the 16th, but soon sailed into an unexpected hazard, hooking up Lobster Pots off Newfoundland. My favourite “Green Dragon” was worst hit with one line sawing it way into the Dagger Board. At this time the distance between the boats is very little. There should be big celebrations at Galway the Home Port of Green Dragon.
We hope to see you at Cuevas Canal next Sunday, the 31st, remember it´s an Open Day.
Take care

Blue Sky Shinning on me....., so why am I so Happy? The Puddy Cats have gone astray and the Garrucha Slipway has been dug-up but every cloud has a Silver lining. Last week, we had a very good meeting with Don Alfonso, the Jefe of the Garrucha Port Authority. He told me that the new slipway will be completed early in July, it is not going to be a Free slipway but we will have a concession !
We have just returned from a meeting with the Directors of the “Mediterránea Sport Center “ Cuevas, why is it these Directors look so young? As a result: we will be back, sailing on the Cuevas Canal (lake) this Sunday the 18th, there will be a fee to pay but it sounds reasonable. You will find no better place to put Youngsters or Pensioners on the water, a great place for a quiet afternoon.
Make a note of this Date, Sunday the 31st of May, it will be an Open Day at the Canal (Cuevas), and the 7th Anniversary of the Santa Irene Club de Vela. On that date 2002, there were 9 boats on show at the Artisan Center. To celebrate, in collaboration with the Cuevas Sport Center, there will be a “Dinghy Boat Show” perhaps the first in Spain! If you have a dinghy, and are wiling to bring it along, give me a call or email, the More the Merrier. How big will this “Dinghy Boat Show” be in 10 years time? Oh! I think I´m going to need a bit of help.
I took with me to the Directors meeting the latest information on the Volvo Ocean Race, just to let them know that we are also interested in Big boat sailing, I´ll pass it on to you. They are now on Leg Seven, Boston to Galway, 2550 nautical miles. Dermot tells me: there are some cheap flights to Dublin but you would need to be there at the end of this month, that´s not possible because I need to see you at the “Dinghy Boat Show” in Cuevas.
See you Sunday morning at the lake.
Take care
