Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 2nd May 2009
Would you believe it ! I've only been away 5 weeks, I came back to find some of my brood have flown away, they want to do their own thing !What can I say to the Catamaran Sailors of Mojacar:
a “Big Thank You” for helping me bring sailing to Mojacar playa. I should feel Sad they have decided to leave us but it is a Success Story for Santa Irene. There wasn´t a sail in sight 7 years ago when the Club was created on the 31st of April 2002. The membership that year was 5 young girls, it was difficult for us to launch the “Oppies” or “Mirror” dinghies from the playa so we would go to Garrucha. Occasionally, we went to Aguilas where Pedro Juan would loan us a 17ft sail boat.
No problem launching from the slipway, except one day I fell over board with a lots of laughter from the girls. It´s always been fun teaching kids to sail.
Do we still have Catamarans sailors in the Club? Yes, I am a member of the Polynesian Catamaran association and have sailed their Cats in the U.K. David, our “Flying 15” sailor and R.I.B instructor was the owner of a “Dart 18” Cat. Trevor “Tideway” sailed his 34ft Catamaran from the U.K across the Bay of Biscay down the Coast of Portugal to the Mediterranean.
On my drawing board are Plans for my “Kiddy Kat” or will it be “Oppie Cat” only 8ft long and ideal for the Kids at Cuevas Canal. So, we have not given up on a Catamaran Fleet for the Santa Irene Club.
I´ve been looking through my record collection to find a Disk suitable for the occasion; they are a bit dated like me, but no pasa nada. How about” Good Bye its been good to know you” or a Vera Lynn song: “We´ll Meet Again” or the Song that was sung throughout the Royal Tour of South Africa, when ever H.M.S Vanguard was leaving Port “Now is the Hour...”. My Oppo, John Bowen was on board, while I was left in H.M.S Devonport, the date was February 1947.
Having had my bit a Fun, I sincerely wish the Cat Sailors: Safe and Happy Sailing and for the rest of You, you will find me at the dinghy park near the slipway Garrucha. I´ll be Banging my Drum and singing “ Come and Join Us “
Take care
