Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 12th August 2009
It was looking like “Rain in Cherry Blossom Lane” a few days ago, what a pity it didn´t happen.
I guess we will have to wait until October.
Having had too much sun recently, I decided that I needed a rest, so August is going to be my rest period. I bit of house decorating, tidy up the “Drascombe”, fit the “Topper” with a centre main sheet, etc.
We have had a good meeting with the “Jefe”of the Port Authority, in his office, looking at a plan of the new Marina . The news is: there will be a “Provisional Slipway” at some time in the near future, possibly September. The long term plan is: there will be a Permanent Slipway near the Virgin “Carmen del Mar” by October 2010, which means the local fishermen and small boat sailors will launch nearer to the open sea, away from the Commercial shipping. I´m looking forward to the day when we can really establish a Sailing Club.
Now, Cuevas and that unique stretch of water, ideal for Beginners and Experts to train . I hope we will be back there in September. Does it have a future as a Sailing Centre? It would if some one like “Laser Sailing” would introduce their “Laser Bug” the 8 ft 4in, modern sailing Dinghy for youngsters and the Laser 4.7 as they move on towards the Laser Radial and Standard Laser. Who knows, we may have a future Olympic Sailors in our midst!!
At Cuevas, you can sail all the year round, with no high seas to cause a problem.
Dinghy Sailing should be a fast growing sport in Spain but its not happening here, perhaps that´s because it´s not on show, you could see it all happening at Cuevas.
Sailing as a sport is growing for the Big Yachts. We have the Volvo Ocean Race out of Alicante, the Americas Cup at Valencia, the Two handed Barcelona Word Race, the 5 Ocean Race started from Bilbao, I remind you the Extreme 40s, those Big Cats, will be racing at Almeria in October.
I see our Olympic Gold Medallist, Paul Goodison sailing in the Laser European´s in Sweden, took the Title. He has been unbeaten on the International Circuit since taking gold at the Olympics.
We wish him Success at the World Championships in Canada coming soon.
I am looking forward to September when we will have our “Osprey” on the high seas

Sailing News Sol Times - 19th August 2009
Global Warming! Some thing is happening. Here I am, in a cold bath, trying to keep my writing pad dry, and having to add a few ice cubes from time to time. I´m resting this month but some of the lads and lasses have taken “Dos Amigos” off her berth in Garrucha the last couple of Sundays.
The Garrucha slipway?Things are happening on the far side of the Harbour, we will know more by the end of this month.
Many of the Spanish Sailing Clubs suspend all their activities during August, it´s not such a bad idea. However, up in Scotland, at the Largs Sailing Club, there were over 350 Optimist Sailors competing in the 48th British Open and National Championships, youngsters come from all over the World to compete. Some of the most Illustrious names in the sport of sailing have their names on the Trophy. Ben Ainslie, our triple Olympic Gold Medallist is one of them, he was there to inspire our youngsters, I´m sure it was appreciated. The overall winner was Callum Airlie, 2nd was Josh Vollre from the UK, 3rd Roger Dover from the USA, 4th was Oscar Pijoan from Spain.
Another Big event in the UK at Pwlheli SC, Wales, the National Championships for the “Topper” where again over 300 Dinghies were involved. Christopher Evans was crowned National Champion.
Now! I can hardly believe this News. “The men in Gray Suits”or the Olympic committee have just confirmed that the number of Sailing events at the 2012, London Olympics will be reduced from 11 to 10 and the Catamarans are “Out”. This at a time when Catamaran Sailing is growing through out the World. Here in the Port of Almeria, during October, we will have the opportunity to see the “Extreame 40 Catamarans” completing their Mediterranean series, it could be spectacular with these Big Cats racing close inshore. We may organize a Coach Trip to Almeria, if you are interested call me or Victor on 959529399.
Another visit you may wish to make is to the “Barcelona Boat Show” 7 to the 15th of November. We will be there representing Santa Irene.
Keep cool, drink plenty... Water, y hasta la vista amigos.
