Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 31st March 2010
Saturday the 20th, Houri and I made an early start to visit Club de Mar in Almería, and what a great day we had! I recall we were singing their praises all the way home.
This was a Regatta for the Radio Control “International One metre Yachts”, the trophy was: “Copa de España 2010”. There were 43 Skippers from Spain, France and Italy, no British but a New Zealand Skipper; Living in Valencia, his name is: Ian Vickers, sail nº 189, who finished on the Podiom in second place; in 3rd place was Juan Egea Castejon, sail nº 90 from Madrid. The Champion and Trophy winner was Gillermo Beltri Fernandez, sail nº 47. They sailed on the sea in a sheltered bay on the North side of the Club.
We were on a balcony some 25 ft above the water, with a perfect view of the Startline and the whole Course. Yacht Racing rules apply and the 1st Mark was to windward and if you were a a racing dinghy sailor, you could appreciate the Tactics. I can well imagine some “macho hombre” out there saying:” This is for Kids”. All the people we met were seasond sailors, some of our Olympic Sailors have been involved in this Sport. Ian Vickers from New Zealand is with Team Oracle BMW, the Winners of the America´s Cup for the USA, that´s the reason he is in Valencia.
This is a sport for any one of any age, the boats are transportable to any were in the World. Recalling my model yacht sailing, back in the 30´s at the Bournville Yachting Pool, when I would try to sail my little boat, I decided to consult Google about Radio Control Sailing in Birmingham.
Imagine my surprise, when on the screen was “A Class RC Yachts” racing at Bournville, Birmingham; at the end of the day, there had been 14 races, local Skipper, Chris Harris (recently back from the “International One metre” World Championships in Barbados) won the Regatta.
Apart from the Trophies, the first three Skippers, received a Bottle the Finest Bournville Wine!!
Have Cadbury´s gone into Brewing Wine?
At the Almería Regatta was our good friend Rodolfo, his International One Metre Yacht was with him but not sailing. He was one of the organizers and on the Committee. If you want to know more about R.CYachts, have a chat with him at his new Book Shop in Vera, it´s “Nobel “ Calle del Mar nº 49, where the Banks are; it´s well worth a visit with English and Spanish books including many nautical books.
I´ll be keeping you up to date with R.C. Yachting, in the future, we could have a Regatta in Garrucha or on the Cuevas Lake.
Last Sunday was good for some our Dinghy sailors , who sailed down to Villaricos; it was ideal weather with a light N.E wind. We enjoyed the company of Michael from Carboneras, who has been sailing there for many years and a Famiily from Los Gallardos.
We look forward to meeting you at our Club House “El Rincon del Puerto”, Garrucha, Sunday moorning at 11am onwords.
Take care, John
