Last Sunday the 14th, a lovely Spring day. We did wonder about the wind but it arrived as forecast a light southerly. We had a dozen sailors on the water, Trevor “tideway” with crew Dave, were the first away. If you want “comfortable Sailing”come and look at the “Tideway”; a 12 ft traditional “Swallow and Amazons” style dinghy, with beautiful wood trim, gleaming brass fittings, lovely to look at and a joy to sail.
Trevor is a very accomplished Yachtsman, having fitted out a 34 ft Prout Cruising Catamaran in the UK, he sailed it down to the Mediterranean, has cruised around the Islands of Turkey and Croatia, while many of us were dreaming about it. Now Trevor sails his “Tideway” whenever and were ever he can. When he returns to the UK for the Summer, it goes with him so he can visit any meetings the Class Association may organize.
I see there is a “Meet” a Chichester harbour on the 4th to 6th of June. Its an Aera I knew well back in the 50´s when “Crab Searl” oppened, what must have been one of the first Sailing Schools after the War, at Emsworth near Chichester .The name “Crab” had nothing to do with the water variety; it had to do with him flying Aircraft sideways, his full title was Group Capitan F.H.L. Seal. The Royal Navy had taught me to sail and I was happy to take my holidays there and do a bit of teaching in “Wayfarers” and the “Enterprise”- happy days!
Comfortable sailing, where you can relax and brew- up. I remind you we have 3 small cruisers, Nº 3 needs a little TLC. but I hope we will see her on the water this year. On the Horizon is Nº 4, she may be part of our Family soon. It´s a “Macgregor 26” a very interesting sailing cruiser from America. Out there too is another Macgregor 26, a Dart 18, a Wayfarer, a Mirror dinghy, they too could be part of our Family.
If it´s on your driveway or in the garage, perhaps we could have a chat, give me a call.
Radio Controlled Yacht Racing, the sport is growing all over the world. One class of yacht is the “International 1 metre”, the mast which is 1.7 metres long, is removable as is the Keel; it´s all fits into a box so you can take it anywhere, even fully rigged, it will fit in the boot of your car. Racing is organized simular to full sized yacht racing, using the same Rules. As a skipper, you are safe, warm and dry, its a sport ideal for the whole family.
Our good friend Rodolfo, an Ocean sailor, is also a member of the Model Yacht Ass. and owner of an “International 1 metre Yacht”; he will participate this weekend in a Regatta at Almería. I believe the Regatta will take place in the swimming pool which was used for the Mediterranean Games. Houri and I will be there on Saturday the 20th and will report back, we are looking forward to the event.
Meet you for coffee at the Rincon del Puerto Sunday morning 11 am .
Take care, John
