Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 31st August 2011
“Here we are again...” you can´t beat those old songs. Personally, I´m pleased August is over, less trafic on the playa etc...I did intend to have a quiet August, I did, along with the pain of Shingles or Herpes; so I am now looking forward to the Autumn and those cool days, perhaps even a holiday! So what have the Lads and Lases been doing?
Still meeting at our Club house and sailing when they can. Michael has been Banging the Drum for Saturday sailing, with some success which I applaud. He sails the ideal dinghy for his size, the Wayfarer, I hope some of you will join him. I´m looking forward to seeing the return of our sailors from the UK. with stories of their adventures; some of them were visiting “Cowes Week”, Isle of Wight. I,m hopping they were there to see the “Extreme 40 Cats” racing in Act 5 of the Extreme Sailing Series. It was a week of big winds and high adrenalin action and some of the closest Stadium Racing ever seen in front of some of the bigest crowds seen at Cowes. The winner of this Act of the Series was our very own Leigh McMillan Skipper of “The Wive Muscat”, Leigh was born on the Isle of Wight. so it was a great day for him and the Island.
There was a “ must see program” on the BBC, it was the Olympic Test Event at Weymouth and Portland, presented by Shirley Robinson, we don´t get many of those programs on TV. She interviewed each of our Olympic Hopefuls in each of the Classes. We also saw a lot of “ On the water footage”.It was fabulous, how can we get a copy of it. The Event was a 6 medal haul, with gold for Ben Aisle plus 3 silver and 2 bronze which made the UK. top of the medale table. The Team were a little disappointed especially since they were on home waters. There were several forth places which is the worst result if you are a competitor. They still have time to sharpen up before the Start of the Olympic Games.
This is the 3rd time the Olympics has been held in the UK. The 1st was in 1908, No I don´t remember that one but Yes, 1948´s Games were in my time; I was a 20 year old in the RN. And we were in Portland. The Olympic Sailing Events were held in Torbay, Torquay, Devon.
Look forward to seeing you at the Club House: Rincón Del Puerto, Garrucha, 11 am Sundays.
Take care
