Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 6th October 2010
“There she was a walking down the Street”. Not this one, she was sailing sedately in the light breeze just over 200 metres from the shore line, out side the yellow marker buoys. A 3 masted “Tallship”, Square Rigged on the foremast, a Barquentine. It was a couple of Sundays ago, we had enjoyed our lunch / dinner at “El Cid” on the playa, was she heading for Garrucha harbour? I couldn´t believe our luck! Off we went in pursuit, taking a couple of photos as she entered, morring along side the loading dock, to be met by Yours truly and a few members of the Club. She was on her way North to do a tour of the Balearic Islands. On board were 36 passengers in 18 luxury cabines, enjoying the sights and sounds of life on the Ocean Waves. She could carry 118 passengers on a day trip. Built in 1905, she has been well looked after, now with all mod-cons. She left the following morning, her name: “Atlantis”, She is a lady I would like to know much better.
Then, last week, traveling in the opposite direction was Ralph, bringing down his 6.25 motor cruiser from the “Mar Menor”to Villaricos. He would like to thank his crew: Club members David, Tony, Bruce. They left Los Nietos at approximately 9 am and arrived at Villaricos at 8 pm. They had a good trip, plenty to eat and drink: non alcoholic! Caching fish on the way which was consumed the following day. Do you need a licence for that?! Too late, the evidence has gone.
Looking at my Admiralty Charts, the trip could have been 110 nautical miles.
Now: it all happening in Almeria harbour 9th to 12th of October. Its the count down to the Battle for overall Victory in the “Extreme 40 Catamaran Series”. Just 4 poins separate the top 4 boats at the top the Leader Board. Paul Cambell-James and his crew on “The Wave Muscat” leads with 28 points. “Edmond de Rothschild” 27 points,”Encover Sailing” 25 points. “Oman Sail Masirah” 24 points, it was the Winner last year. Two new Teams will be competing: “Rumbo Almeria” and “Emirates Team New Zealand”, that could put the “Cat among the Pigeons”, there will be 10 boats on the water! Houri and I will be there to spread the word and will report back.
No room for Club News this week but I can tell you its been good. Keep arriving at our Club House “El Rincon del Puerto”, Garrucha, and I´ll be Happy
Take care.

Sailing News Sol Times - 22nd September 2010
“We almost made it this time” as the song goes, that´s twice recently, we´ve had 9 boats on the water. I´m looking forward to the magic 10, when we can Splice the Mainbrace, that will happen when the rest of our Helmsmen and the Ladies, are back in the fold. I´m happy to tell you that´s only a third of the Fleet owned by the Club and Club members; I´ve just totted them up and it is over 30; yes it´s surprised me. Not bad when you think we started with 3 Oppies, 2 old Cadets and 2 old Mirror Dinghies. What we need now is couple of “Laser Picos” to help us get the youngsters on the water. Unfortunately the Hand of the Lottery Fund, will not reach out to us here in Spain.
It was great to see Trevor´s new wooden “Tide Way”, a real traditional “Swallows and Amazon´s” Classic. Sunday was good for the Membership too with a new 5 metre German sailing Dinghy and a Spanish 420.
Dont forget one of the biggest events in the racing calender, and this on our doorstep, the final event of the “Extreme 40 Catamaran” Series in Almería. This is: In Harbour, Stadium Style, Racing. You will witness the Start, the Race and the Finish, the duration of each race is only about 15 minutes; with 6 to 8 races each afternoon on the 10th, 11th, 12th of October. Remember, this is the Final Event of the 2010 Series, wich started in France then went on to England, Germany, Italy with the Final Spain, Almeria, where the Trophy will be presented to the Overall Winner.
As I write Trapani, in Sicily, plays Host to the penultimate round in the Series. It´s very tight at the Top of the Leader Board, with just 3 points separating the Top 3 boats. There isn´t a clear winner in the Fleet, so any thing can happen; the 2010 Champion will not be decided until the Final Event in Almeria. There is Entertainment ashore as well as on the Water. Hope to see you there.
Remember, Sailing is a Family Sport, you can all join in. Come and have a coffee and chat with us, at the Rincon Del Puerto, Garrucha.
Take care.
