Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 26th June 2010
It´s been good sailing the last couple of Sundays; with the Wayfarer, 420, Europe, Solo, Pastinaca, Devon Yawl and Casi Casi, Dinghies on the water; plus the Cruisers: Magregor 26, Delher 25 and Infinity. Every one that wanted to be on the high seas had their wish granted, thanks to the cruiser skippers: Sue, Ian, Rosie and Steve. Remember, we have started Saturday sailing, come along for a chat and have coffee with us. If you are new to sailing that´s no problem, age is no barrier, we have boats to suit every one. Some of our Olympic sailors started at the age of 4 years, Helen Drew crossed the Atlantic on the Southern Route, at the age of 86 years!! So there is still time for me.
I´ve been reading about a new “Single hander” the “K1” which is for all ages. It´s 15 ft long with a 60 kg. Bulb Keel to keep it up right which you can lift and lower. The hull weight is only 50 kg, it´s slim so you sit on the side deeks and sail her in confort, it´s sounds good for us over 50 year olds !!
The kids in the Uk have been enjoying them selves again. 317 “Optimists” were at the “Volvo Musto Inland Championships” held at Grafham Water Sailing Club last month.
The age range was 8 to 15 year old, I would like to hear from any one who knows Grafham Water.
Did you know it´s “Mirror Dinghy” year, there is a campaign to get all those Mirror Dinghies that have been abandoned in garages etc. to dust them off and launch them on the 17th of July. So, if you have one we will help you launch it with a bottle of Champagne.
I know, I have told you about the 18 ft. “Laser SB 3” dinghy-keel boat. I haven´t heared that they are in Spain, but there are two in ST Petersburg, Russia. They are visiting France on there way to the “World Championships” at Lake Garda , Italy. If you speak Russian perhaps we could persuade them to visit us, our weather must be better than ST. Petersburg.
Going to the UK? Put Weymouth and Portland near the top of your list of places to visit. The Sailing Venue for the 2012 Olympic´s. It´s up and running now! With regular Championships; the most recent being the “RYA Volvo Youth Nationals”, note the word Youth! The young sailors are preparing for the “World Youth Sailing Championships” to be held at Istanbul, Turky in July. I will be reporting the results. These young sailors are our future Olympians. Where are the Youth of this Area?
Hope to meet you at our Club House “El Rincon del Puerto” Garrucha Marina on Saturday and Sunday at 11am.
Take care.

Sailing News Sol Times - 30th June 2010
Oh, dear what can the matter be!! To all those England Football Suporters; I should give up and suport “Our Dinghy Sailors”; they are “Winers”. Our sailors have Won more Medals than any other Nation in the World. I´m banging the drum and singing “Come and Join Us”.
Last Sunday, the 17ft. 6in. “Osprey”with Lyne, Ian and David on bord were testing their racing skills. This is a fast and exiting boat to sail. Also out there were the two “Pastinaca´s”, “420”, “Casi Casi” and the “Devon Yawl”. A few of our sailors have returned to the UK. The good news is: we have a new arrival. The “Lark”is a Two-man ( or women) racing dinghy; widely used by our Universities in the UK. for Match racing or Team racing.
Peter, the owner of the “Lark”, is an experienced sailor and dinghy Instructor. We are very happy to welcome him into our Club. He will also have a wide variety of dinghies to sail. The Lark Nationals will at Teigmouth 24 to 30 of July, visit them if you are in the West Country.
Now, its frustrating for our Catamaran sailors, once again, the Playa opposite Mr. UK has been enclosed by Yellow Buoys; marking it as a swimming Zone. In the past, this playa was marked as a Nautical Zone.
My first experience of sailing from Mojacar Playa in 2002 was in the area of the Neptune bar. Where I thought we were going to have the use of a Property and a Hut on the playa. “We should be so Lucky”.The Hut arrived but immediately; I was told it was NOT for our use!! At this moment in time, there are no Yellow Buoys in that area, it may be worth a return visit.
For those of you returning to the UK., try to visit your local Sailing Club, it will not be far away.
Should you be in the South if England, the “Nacional Sailing Centre” at Portland is a must. The venue of the 2012 Sailing Olympics, its up and running “Now”. On the 23 to 30 of July, they are expecting 600 “Optimists” at a Regatta, what a sight that will be!
Visit us at the Club house at El Rincon del Puerto, Garrucha; 11am. Saturday and Sunday.
Take care, use the cream
