Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 4th August 2010
Congratulations and Celebrations at the”Garrucha Club de Vela”. Never has there been such a happy and fun packed Regatta in Garrucha. It had every thing, a Competitors pontoon, Marquee´s to keep us cool, a Bar for drinks and socializing when the racing was over, a Giant paella in the evening after the presentations of the trophies on Sunday the 1st of August.
The event was the “IV IberCaja Regatta” so many of the crews were old friends. A big “Thank You” must go to the Sponsors: IberCaja Bank, also to Don Alfonso and the Port Authority for completing the Pontoon on time, to the Organizing Committee and the Race Officer Pedro Juan from Aguilas and old friend of Santa Irene Sailing Club. There were 27 Competing Yachts, divided into 3 classes.
The big boys in Class A, Medium sized in Class B, then the 8 metres Yachts ( más o menos ) in Class C. It was light winds for both days, Sat. 31st July and Sun. 1st August, with a Race on each day. The Yachts competing were from Garrucha, Aguilas, Mazaron, Almería.
Did Santa Irene have a Yacht Competing? YES, now is the time to “Bang that Drum and Blow that Horn”. “Blitzen” a 25 ft, Dehler Class, Van de Stadt designed Yacht, with Skipper and Owner “Ian Roriston”at the helm, finished 2nd in Class C to receive a magnificent Telescope Trophy. Surprise, surprise there was more! a Ducking from the Crew: Lynne, a very competent Laser 4000 helm, David, an expert Flying 15 crew, and Bruce, with his weight of knowledge of racing 12 metre yachts.
We can look forward to great things from them in the future! Remember the date 1st of August 2010, and the First Trophy for Santa Irene, we will be happy to receive your congratulations, by Card or Email...
The 1st and Winner of Class C was the president of the Garrucha Club, with his Yacht “El Moromanco”. Our friends in Class A, local Chemist, Miguel, Laura and Family took “Line Honors”in both Races but on Handicap, finished in 2nd place in their Yacht “Spinnaker”.
3rd in Class A was, our local Builders Merchant, Enrique Aguirre, in his Yacht “Amen”. We can look forward to it all happening again next year.
So, what I was doing during this Regatta? Houri and I were on the water, sailing The Drascombe “Dos Amigos” trying to take photos!
Now, away from Garrucha, how well do you know South Africa? And the “Pretoria Sailing Club”, situated on the Rietvei Dam in the “Irene” area, its a Dinghy Sailing Club. I´m happy to say we met the Vice Commodore and Secretary, Chris and Ann English at Garrucha, a couple of weeks ago. I just wish we could accept their invitation to visit but who knows the future? I hope we will be able to put a Link on our website.
Houri and I will be away on the 10th of August, visiting a vilage in the North of Spain, looking for some cool weather. Take care, wear a Big Hat, See you in September.
Take care.

Sailing News Sol Times - 28th July 2010
My youthful bones seem to be complaining about the hot weather; here in Southern Spain. So my plans for August are to visit Asturias and Northern Spain, looking for some cool rain.
The Lads and Lasses will continue sailing, you will find them on Sunday morning , having coffee on the shady side of the “Rincon del Puerto” or in our Dinghy Park behind the Chandlers shop, Garrucha.
Its been good to welcome new friends with a back round of “messing about in boats”, but that does´nt have to be the case, you are all welcome. Sorry about this late news: I enquired about the new pontoon which appeared at Garrucha, to be told that it was for the Visiting Cruisers, taking part in the “Iber Caja” Trophy Regatta”; on the 31st of July and 1st of August. Its a big event in the Cruisers Calender. Is also seems they wish to keep it Quiet!! My guess is the Bank have payed for the Pontoon, if that is right, you would think they would be shouting it from the Mast Tops!!
I hope our local Champions, Miguel and family (Mojacar Chemist) do well. I will at least bring you the results.
The pontoon is NOT part of the new Marina; I think we can expect a year to elapse before it is up and running. . In the mean time as Dinghy Sailors, we can enjoy the “Grand Lagoon” that has been created.
News of the Catamarans Sailors: Vic, Ralph, Jim, Peter plus the Ladies to keep them in order, took a Dart 18, Hobie 16 and Ralph´s RIB, to the Southern end of the “Mar Menor”, staying at Honda Playa for several days. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Imagine being on a Reach ( wind on the side of the boat) for a dozen or more kilometres, sailing on flat water.
I´m sure they are planing their next trip. Vic tells me: its only one and half hours from Vera on the toll road.
Keep cool, drink plenty ( Water Only), wear a big hat.
Take care,
John Talliss
