Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 25th May 2011
As we approach the end of our 9th year, may I reminisce for just a moment. It,s May 2002 ,I am preparing my 8 dinghies for a Boat Show at the new Artisan Center, in Mojacar. We have a date, Saturday the 1st of June, actually, we were there two days enjoying the company of the young lady artists on Sunday. I would love to hear from you if you were there. The membership after the show were my young friends, Analisa, Marian,Vannesa, Vicky and Karian. We used to sail at Garrucha using the “Oppies”and “Mirror” dinghies, my sincere thanks to them for keeping me afloat during that year.
Now we are sailing out of Garrucha in a 30 ft “Catalac Catamaran” serving coffee I hope, plus other cruisers and a variety of dinghies from the 7`6¨ “Oppies” to the 17`6¨”Osprey”. Our next goal will be a Club House and with a little help from our friends: the Port Autority, the future looks good . If you want to be part of it you will be very welcome, the cost? The price of a couple of coffee´s a week more or less. All our members are federated with the Andalusian Federation of Sailing which gives you and us some security.
Our Dinghy Sailors have enjoyed the last couple of weekend, launching from the slipway is no problem. That goes for Lydon too with his light weight inflatable “Catapult” Catamaran, normally a single hander, I hear, he took a passanger from one of our cruising boats and returned her to the shore to keep an appointment, so it will carry two persons. There is a “Catapult” for sale in this area, at the Bargin price of 650 Euros; If you want to see one in action, visit us. For more info. Phone John Slade: 647202599.
Planty of action at “Mar Menor” the inland sea, last week :40 “Foiling Moths” in competition , the venue was “Infanta Cristina” Sport Center, Los Alcazarez, Murcia. Recently, back in the UK. at a recent Regatta of “Moths”, Mike Cooke recorded a speed of 27.8 knots in 30 knots of wind.
Staying in the UK. the 300 “Optimists” racing on Grafham Water, didnt´t quite make that speed, but they did Race in 22-25 knots of wind one day. The youngsters 9 to 14 year olds loved it.
These youngsters are Olympic Sailors in the making!
Remember, sailing is a Family Sport, we would love to see more Families involved. Our doors are open, come and talk to us, Saturday or Sunday, we meet at El “Rincon del Puerto”, Garrucha Marina, 11 am onwards
Take care.
