Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 24th November 2010
Mixed “Mediterranean Weather” has been the order of the day this last month.
Calm balmy days waiting for the wind or strong winds with gusts of 30 knots, so I was told by Ian when he was sailing his 25 ft. “Blitzen” which was well reffed down last Sunday the 21st , but a good time was had by all. Sunday the 14th, Garrucha “Cruising Club” Regatta was one of those calm balmy days, with 8 Yachts competing. Houri and I were invited to join Rosie and Steve on their “Beneteau 34” although they are experienced sailors this was their first Race. There was some confusion as to where the Start Line was and we crossed the line last, with very little wind.
As we gently sailed towards the Villaricos Fish Farm, the wind increased to steady 6 knots. As we reached the turning mark, we were with the fleet again. Back to Garrucha, with a steady wind, we crossed the Line to finish in 4th place. We celebrated with our fellow dinghy sailors at the club house “El Rincón del Puerto”. The next Garrucha Regatta is scheduled for Saturday December the 11th , unfortunately Rosie and Steve will be in the UK.
I am happy to say the “Refit” of our 18 ft. 6 in. Micro Cruiser is now well on the way. I hope we will be able to enter it in the Regattas next year! One day, we may find all 6 of our cruisers on the water at the same time and pursuit racing for our mixed dinghy fleet. It´s an item that may be discussed at our “Annual General Meeting” which will be held on the 14th of December at the “El Puntazo” hotel, Mojacar playa at 8 pm. Please be early. Another item on the agenda will be The “Jubilee Sailing Trust” and Tall Ships.
Did you see the Four Masted Tall Ship on Monday the 15th of November wich was anchored near the entrance of Garrucha Port, lit up from stem to stern, it was not one of our “Square Riggers”. It was “Wind Spirit” a 4 masted Motor Sailing Yacht (M.SC.). It was on passage to it´s Home Port in the Bahamas via Malaga, Tanger, Porimao and Lisbon.
As the nights draw in put another log on the fire and read the adventures of Frank Dye sailing his 16 ft. “Wayfarer” dinghy; sadly Frank died this year. Born in 1928, he was 27 before he seriously started sailing. Later, when he was 30 he bought his first “Wayfarer”, you can see her on display at the National Maritime museum in Cornwall. “Wanderer” was sailed in many parts of the World, some time with his wife Margaret. His early exploits in dinghy cruising were to Iceland and Norway. Read “Ocean Crossing Wayfarer” by Frank and Margaret Dye, price 14.99 pounds. The Kids should buy it for you for Christmas.
Happy reading, hope to see you at Garrucha, any weekend, 11 am. Onwards.
Take care.
