Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 12th October 2011
Light winds and warm sunshine sounds lovely but frustrating for our dinghy sailors ; nevertheless there has been a good turn out for coffee at our Club House, El Rincón de Puerto. I have been polishing the fitting on my “Kittywake”, it´s a gaff yawl, that has´nt been on her Berth for some years. I will be stepping down as Presitent of the Club on the 22nd of November, the date of our A.G.M and looking forward to my retirement sailing my “Classic” dinghy with Houria when ever the weather is suitable.
In spite of the “Crisis” the new pontoons for Garrucha Marina is moving ahead at a fast pace. The date for its completion was the end of the year and it´s quite possible they will make it. To the best of my knowledge there is no official price list for renting a berth. We may have to wait until it´s completion. I have been told: the smallest Berth will be 8 metres, that´s about 26 feet in old money! We will wait and see.
I am writing this on the 12 of October, the Start of the “Extreme 40 Catamarans Racing” in Almería. This is Act 8 in the Series which will end on Sunday the 16th
There are 11 Catamarans racing in this Series. Houria and I have a special interest in
“Emirates team New Zealand” who are 3rd in the overall results. For the first time our very own Superstar Ben Ainslie will Skipper “Oman Air” in Almería, he will then return to the UK. and his training for the “Olympics” next year.
The Final Act of the “Extreme 40 Series” will be in Singapore on the 9th to 11th of December.
Now, from those “40 ft Cats” to the “7 ft 6 in. Optimist” which celebrates its 50th Anniversary as an Association in the UK. this year. “The Optimist” which may look like a Box to some people is the ideal Boat for 8 years olds and exciting enough for 15 year olds. Many of the Skippers in the “Olympics” started sailing in the Optimist; the Class now is as strong as ever; there were 450 Oppies at “The National Championships at Pwllheli Sailing Club this year.
Santa Irene club de Vela was created with me building two Optimists on my patio in 2001 for my two young friends Analisa and Marian.
Look forward to meeting you at El Rincón de Puerto at Garrucha Marina, 11 am any Sunday morning.
Take care
